Texas was hit hard by the state legislature’s abortion bills in 2013 which sought to shut down nearly all the clinics in the state by enacting a series of unnecessary laws aimed at “improving women’s health” (those are scare quotes). About half of TX’s clinics have already closed since Republican Governor Rick Perry signed them into effect. Fortunately, last week a District Court judge ruled that a portion of a law — forcing clinics to adhere to the same rules as ambulatory surgery centers, which affects things like the width of hallways — was unconstitutional and that meant over a dozen remaining clinics in the state did not have to close their doors Keep reading »

California State Legislature Advances “Yes Means Yes” Hookup Bill

todays lady news
  • California’s state senate advanced a bill to require universities that take financial aid from the state to adopt a policy that students must give “affirmative consent” before engaging in sex. The law would state that both parties need to engage in “affirmative, conscious and voluntary agreement” before hooking up — in other words, people can’t justify their actions anymore by saying, Well, she didn’t say no! Domestic Violence Victims Could Qualify For Asylum

todays lady news
  • A ruling by the Justice Department’s Board of Immigration Appeals has found that a woman who fled her abusive husband in Guatemala met one of the criteria for asylum, which is that she belongs to a particular social group (in this case, I think, women who are domestic violence victims). The woman fled her country in 2005 after police refused to help her. An immigration lawyer will now rule on her case; doing so could mean other victims of DV could seek asylum as immigrants. Women Lie About Rape, Says Spanish Politician

todays lady news
  • The mayor of Valladolid, Spain, told a radio show he’s afraid of getting into an elevator alone with a “girl” (yes, he called adult women “girls”) because she could tear her clothes off and fuck him and then falsely accuse him of rape. Quite rightly, everyone is now asking DA FUQ?!  Hooray, for once it is not an American politician who said something stupid and offensive about sexual assault! [Slate]
