Today’s Lady News: Reader Submission Thanksgiving Edition!

Happy Thanksgiving! The Frisky has the day off, so Today’s Lady News will be a reader submission edition! Submit your own links to news articles and blog posts about women, girls, trans-identified people, gender roles, feminism or sexism in the comments. Just write a sentence or two summary explaining what the link is about and give everyone a heads up if it has language or imagery that’s NSFW. We’ll be back on Monday (unless Charlie Sheen gets arrested yet again, in which case someone will drag herself out of a tryptophan coma to blog about it). Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: Herman Cain Signs Anti-Abortion Pledge

  • Herman Cain has finally signed an anti-abortion pledge confirming he is “100 percent pro-life” and that “all human beings have intrinsic dignity.” Trying not to make a joke about the various women who have accused him of violating their intrinsic dignity through sexual harassment. [My Fox Phoenix]
  • A pregnant woman who was demonstrating at an Occupy protest was kicked and peppersprayed by cops, which, she claims, doctors said caused her to miscarry. Horrible. [Feministing] Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: Israeli Women Pose Nude In Support Of Egyptian Blogger

  • Dozens of Israeli women have posed nearly nude for a photograph in support of Aliaa Magda El-Mahdy, a young female Egyptian blogger who posed nude as a sign of protest against her restrictive society. • A Democratic state rep in Georgia plans to champion one of two “fetal personhood” amendments in Georgia, which would change the legal definition of a human to a zygote, therefore criminalizing all abortion. A “fetal personhood” amendment recently failed on the ballot in Mississippi.  [Huffington Post]

Today’s Lady News: How To Discuss Abortion Over Thanksgiving With Your Relatives

  • We all have relatives with whom we disagree on political or social issues. Mine is my dad. We, however, can spar in a friendly way about Barack Obama (him) and Fox News (me) and everyone is still pleasant at the end of the day. Not all families are so lucky, though. That’s why Planned Parenthood has created this cool list of eight easy steps for discussing reproductive rights over the holidays. It’s filled with talking points on how to engage family members in conversation about abortion, the morning-after pill, and sex ed — instead of fighting. [PlannedParenthood.org]
  • The European Union has refused to release a film called “In-Justice: The Story Of Afghan Women In Jail,” which it commissioned, because it said two of the subjects’ lives will be in danger if it does. One woman is doing 12 years in prison for being a rape victim; the other is in jail for leaving her abusive husband. [Yahoo Keep reading »

Today’s Lady News: Judge Scolds Mom For Breastfeeding In Courtroom

Today's Lady News
  • Michigan mother Natalie Hegedus was sitting in the back of a courtroom breastfeeding her son when a bailiff spotted her and wrote a note to the presiding jude. When the judge called her up, the judge then asked her if she thought it was appropriate to do that. She told a local TV station that the judge responded “something to the effect of ‘It’s my court, it’s my decision and I do find it inappropriate.’” What a douche! Breastfeeding is exempt from public indecency laws in Michigan, as it should be. [Huffington Post]
  • A transgender woman who was suspended for using the women’s bathroom at Fort Collins High School in Fort Collins, Colorado, has transferred schools. Dionne Malikowski was born a male and now identifies and dresses as a female. The school required her to use the teachers’ bathroom to avoid controversy, but Dionne used the women’s bathroom instead because not being allowed to do so was discrimination. [The Denver Channel
  • Behold, a line of sex toys that look to the naked eye (heh heh) like lipstick, eyeshadow, and mascara. Hooray for discretion! [Fashionista]

  • Egyptian blogger Aliaa Maghda El-Mahdy, age 20, is posting nude pictures of herself on her blog as political protest about women’s sexuality and censorship. Aliaa calls herself a “secular liberal feminist vegetarian individualist Egyptian” (i.e. hella cool) says she challenges Eypgt’s ”censoring of our knowledge, expression and sexuality.” Rock on, sister.  [The Daily Beast]
  • The best new feminist characters on TV are men. Give us more of ‘em, I say!  [TIME]
  • “I need more evidence” and other dismissive things dudes say that probably make them a ”mansplainer.” [Feministing] Keep reading »
