Today In Terribleness: Kids, Dad Gang Up To Sue Mom For “Bad Mothering”

Michael Lohan ain’t got nothing on Kimberly Garrity in the bad parenting department. The many grave and terrifying abuses inflicted upon her children include a sending a birthday card without money inside, failing to send care packages to her son at college, and calling her daughter at midnight on Homecoming to tell her to come home. She even forced one of her kids to wear a seat belt.

Clearly you can understand why her two children, Steven, 23, and Kathryn, 20, sued Garrity for $50,000 citing “bad mothering.” Keep reading »

Today In Terribleness: A Woman Is Framed For Armed Robbery By Her Ex

Meet Seemona Sumasar. She is 36 years old, a mother, and a former Morgan Stanley analyst who managed a restaurant in Queens. One night about two years ago, her Jeep was pulled over by police. She was shocked to be arrested. “You know you did it. Just admit it,” a police officer threatened her.

“It” was a string of armed robberies. Specifically, ones where a woman approached victims wearing a policewoman’s uniform and then turned her gun on them. Only Sumasar hadn’t done “it.” “It” had never actually happened. Keep reading »

Today In Terribleness: Woman Attempts To Sell Baby At Taco Bell

A woman in Washington was arrested for allegedly making a run to the border with her three-day-old son. Officials responded when they received a 911 call reporting that 36-year-old Heidi-Lynn Knowles had approached a patron at the local Taco Bell and tried to sell her a baby for $500. The woman and her infant were located by cops at a local motel, where the child was immediately taken into custody. I know Taco Bell has a value menu and all, but whether it was birther’s remorse or a desire for drug money, Knowles should have been asking way more for her baby burrito. In all seriousness, WHAT? Let’s hope this sweet baby is placed in a loving home soon. [Seattle Times] Keep reading »

Texas Rangers Fan Falls To His Death Trying To Catch Baseball Thrown By Josh Hamilton

Ugh, this is such an awful story. A 39-year-old father took his son to a Texas Rangers baseball game in Arlington, TX, last night, and when outfielder Josh Hamilton (left) tossed him a foul ball, he fell 20 feet to his death trying to catch it. A man sitting near Shannon Stone tried to grab him by the leg as he fell over the railing, but wasn’t able to keep ahold of him. “He went straight down,” Ronnie Hargis said. “I tried to grab him, but I couldn’t. I tried to slow him down a little bit.” Keep reading »

Today In Terribleness: Death By Neck Massage?

Electronic neck massagers are the perfect way to end a long day of holiday shopping and gift wrapping, right? Uh, maybe not. A 37-year-old Florida woman, Michelle Ferrari-Gegerson, was found dead on her bedroom floor on Christmas Eve after her electronic massager wrapped around her necklace and strangled her to death. Authorities are not yet giving information about the make and model of the massager, but we should be expecting a recall any day now. I’m still not sure I understand how exactly that happened, but consider me terrified enough never to use an electronic neck massager ever again just in case it should decide to strangle me while I’m relaxing. Good lord, that’s an awful thought. [Palm Beach Post] Keep reading »

Today In Terribleness: Murder, Murder, And More Murder

  • Brian Lewis was super jealous that Hayley Jones, his wife and the mother of his four children, was spending so much time on the internet. When she changed her relationship status from “married” to “single” on Facebook, he completely flipped out and stabbed and strangled her to death. He called an ambulance, but fled the house, leaving his kids to discover that their mother was dead. He’s on trial for murder as we speak. [Daily Mail]
  • A 26-year-old mom called police saying that her 5-week-old son had been taken by an ex-boyfriend. They eventually found the baby’s body in a trash can near the woman’s apartment. Police suspect that this woman killed her own son, hoping to cover up the fact that the child’s father is actually 16 years old. [CNN]

Today In Terribleness: The Children’s Edition

Childhood is supposed to be marked by innocent playtime, school, and family. Children shouldn’t have to endure anything more serious than parents’ divorcing or the death of a relative. Recently, however, children have been in the news for reasons that would make most adults unable to cope. Keep reading »

Today In Terribleness: The Worst Edition, Ever.

Some really awful things have happened this week and, unfortunately, a huge percentage of them happened to women. We know you don’t exactly enjoy reading about this kind of stuff but, hey, it’s important. So here it goes.

  • Okay, this story is really awful. A Massachusetts woman named Darlene Haynes, 23, was found dead in her closet after neighbors complained of a smell coming from her house. Worse still—the woman’s 8-month-old fetus had been cut out of her body. The baby could have survived, but would have needed medical attention ASAP. It looks like someone may have literally stolen her baby. Horrible. [CNN]

Today In Terribleness: Sexual Assault, Crying Rape, And That Austrian Psycho

  • A University of Connecticut student recounts being sexually assaulted on campus, fighting back against her attacker, and then being assaulted AGAIN by onlookers. [DailyCampus.com]
  • A woman who was having an affair, cried “rape” when she was caught by her husband because she says she feared for her life — her husband shot her lover and killed him. This past week, the wife was convicted of involuntary manslaughter, while her husband, who shot the guy in the first place, walks free. Was she convicted because of her lie (that she was raped) or because of her infidelity? [Broadsheet]
  • Remember that disgusting cretin from Austria who kept his daughter locked up for 24 years, raped her, and fathered six of her children? He says, “I could have killed all of them, and nothing would have come out of that. No-one would have ever known about it….I have not been treated fairly, it has all been one-sided.” [Daily Mail U.K.]
