Where most of New York Fashion Week’s entries are respectable, predictable sportswear (Donna Karan) or fluttery feminine gowns (Zac Posen), there’s always one kooky dude you can count on to really blow the whole thing out. Thom Browne’s menswear collections are the epitome of preppy eccentric (though sometimes his menswear runway shows can be pretty wild). But his womenswear? Now that is some crazy stuff.
He’s sent lobster ladies down the runway, and postmodern space ensembles dominated his Spring/Summer 2013 collection. His latest collection seems mega-inspired by Comme des Garçons designer Rei Kawakubo, who relishes in creating looks that defy not just expectation, but anatomy. We love how this simultaneously plays with form and references traditional and restrictive Victorian styles.
Plus, he’s one of the few designers who really believes in putting on a frickin’ show. And for that, we applaud him.
We’ve long been a fan of quirky, sort of out-there American designer Thom Browne, so it’s pretty great to see him get pop culture recognition — on the presidential inauguration stage, no less. The outrageous sportswear designer has been a fan of putting models dressed as lobsters on the runway in the past, but is versatile enough to design clothes that the FLOTUS loves, too. Take a look through his most recent collection, and tell us if you’d wear Thom Browne, too.
A lot of times I’ll glance through the season’s runway collections and think, Isn’t anyone thinking of the marine biologists?! Like Christopher Walken’s “SNL” character demanded more cowbell, I say, “More bedazzled lobsters and embroidered whales!” And finally–finally–a designer has stepped up to the plate. Thom Browne’s S/S 13 menswear collection is chock full of sea life, like this whale-embellished vest. Click through to see a few more ocean-inspired looks! [Style Bubble]
So, I was flipping through the latest collections from NY Fashion Week and I came across American designer Thom Browne’s newest looks. Browne is more well-known for his menswear line, but this collection focused primarily on women. Or birds. Or lobsters. It’s just … out of control, from boxy shoulders, to outsized proportions, to fantastical sea creatures. You must see it to believe it!
Step off, bitches. The man in the halter, polka-dot baby romper and oversized bucket hat is mine. [Thom Browne Spring 2010 show, NYC, 9/13/09] Keep reading »
