File this under really strange ideas for television shows: E! is developing a scripted drama inspired by the book Dorothy and The Wizard of Oz. “Dorothy” (as it’s currently titled) will follow a girl from Kansas City who falls in love with a man and moves with him to Emerald City to work at his Emerald Hotel. And we need another version of “The Wizard of Oz” because … ? An animated film, “Dorothy of Oz,” is on the way, as is Michelle Williams’ and James Franco’s “Oz: The Great and Powerful.” The original “Wizard of Oz” is holding up quite nicely. And “Return to Oz,” the 1985 sequel starring Fairuza Balk, is a classic as far as I’m concerned. So, I think we’re all set on the “Wizard of Oz” front. Obviously, the only way this Wiz TV show can be good is if they cast Kim Kardashian as Dorothy and Kanye West as The Wizard. [EW]

James Franco Says The Wizard Of Oz Is A “Cad”

“When we first meet Oz, he’s a carnival showman, a magician. He’s kind of a cad. He’s a bit of a lothario, a seducer … In Oz he’s allowed a second chance.”

James Franco talks about his character in “Oz: The Great and Powerful” the “Wizard of Oz” prequel that will explain how the wizard got to Oz in the first place. Director Sam Raimi, along with Franco, hosted a first look at the movie at Disney’s D23 fan gathering, even though it just started shooting and isn’t scheduled for release until 2013. Hmm, judging from his description, seems like James might just be the perfect fit for the role. [EW]

Lea Michele Is Off To See The Wizard

Get ready for “The Wizard of Oz” revisited. The official word in Munchkinland is that Lea Michele of “Glee” has just signed on to play Dorothy in a new 3-D, animated version of the book Dorothy of Oz. The story takes place the day after the big tornado, when Dorothy is transported back to a troubled Oz to help her friends — the Scarecrow (Dan Aykroyd), the Tin Man (Kelsey Grammer), and the Cowardly Lion (James Belushi). She also makes a couple of new friends along the way, like Marshall Mallow (Hugh Dancy), a man made of marshmallows. Ha! And instead of a wizard, there is an evil Jester (Martin Short) who wants to take over all of Oz. I’m hoping the music will be amazing … and that Toto is coming along for the journey. Yes, I’ll be following the yellow brick road all the way to box office. [Dorothy of Oz] Keep reading »

Here’s A Christmas Present We Wouldn’t Mind Getting

It’s no secret that we’re obsessed with red, Dorothy shoes around here. That’s why our ears perked up when we heard that over the weekend the Hollywood Entertainment Museum held an auction, and one of the items up for bid was a pair of ruby slippers that came labeled “MGM Wardrobe J. Garland.” So far, the lucky winner has not been named. But before anyone gets too excited, there’s a bit of Hollywood drama and mystery involved with the ruby slippers. Keep reading »
