This story is all kinds of fucked up: a pregnant woman in Essex, UK, was sedated and had her baby forcibly taken from her womb via C-section because she was not taking her medication for bipolar disorder. The child is now 15-months-old and in the care of social services. The woman, an Italian who was in the UK for a Ryanair training course, is now trying to get her child back. Keep reading »

Dream job anyone?! British 27-year-old Emma Gray is not a shepherdess; she has just become the first woman in history to win the Northumberland Sheepdog Trials League. The storied championship has never had a female winner in its 40 years. She began shepherding while helping out at her parents’ farm in Scotland as a young girl, and has been breaking boundaries ever since as Britain’s youngest in the profession. Gray told the UK’s Daily Mail:
“I am really proud to be the first woman to have won the trials and I feel overwhelmed by it all … I was one of only a handful of women taking part; it is a very male-dominated sport, so it feels like an amazing achievement.” Keep reading »
Jane Austen is the newest face on Britain’s 10 pound note. Yay feminism, right? Well, hold your horses, sister suffragette, because now Austen’s biographer is howling about an airbrushing scandal. Keep reading »
Oh, no big deal … it’s just the trailer for THE FINAL EPISODE OF MY FAVORITE TV SHOW EVER. Yes, chickadees, the last episode of the Brit-com that put Richard Ayoade, Chris O’Dowd and Katherine Parkinson on the map (in my heart, at least) is airing tonight in the UK on Channel 4. Some Frisky reader across the pond who watched it, email me and tell me everything about it, okay? No word on when it will air in the United States, if at all. I watched all the episodes on Netflix, where I would instruct you to check them out if you know what’s good for you. [Laughing Squid]
Women’s rights charities in the UK are warning women and girls who are being trafficked into forced marriages to hide spoons inside their underwear at airports to set off metal detectors. The Guardian UK reported that when women have done this, they have been taken aside by airport security for further questioning and have been able to seek help from authorities. Keep reading »
The British really aren’t into sex, huh? After their Prime Minister David Cameron went after internet porn last week, now The Co-operative Group, one of the largest magazine retailers in the UK, is demanding that “lads’ magazines” showing skimpily-clad cover models provide a modesty bag by September 9 to be sold in their stores. Not This Crap Again: Student Suspended For Bringing “Disrepute” To UK College After Reporting Alleged Rape
An 18-year-old female student claims she was suspended from Bishop Burton College in the UK after she reported a sexual assault to the administration because her behavior had brought the college into “disrepute.”
The victim claimed that fellow students Stephen Johnson, 21; William Robinson, 22; and Thomas Price spoke to her outside a residence hall late one evening while she was drunk, then took her cell phone and keys and pushed her into a room where they allegedly sexually assaulted her. (CCTV shows that she was walking with her arm around Robinson.) Nevertheless, her roommate told Hull Crown Court, which is currently hearing the case, that the victim was heard shouting “Get off! Get out of my room!” After the alleged incident, the three men left the room laughing; Johnson and Robinson allegedly came to her later to apologize for hurting her.
The victim said when she reported the rape to Bishop Burton College, they told her she had brought the school “into disrepute by having sexual actions with a group of people.” Several days later, she was informed the school had “excluded” (suspended) her, as well as the three young men, over the incident. The school also sent her a letter saying she was suspended for “demeaning sexual action.” Forced by her family to explain why she was suspended from college, she told them about the sexual assault ; they urged her to report it to police (note: the school booted her out before she even reported it to police!). A police nurse found a bruise on the woman’s groin a full week later. Now, the three young men are facing a mix of charges including sexual assault by penetration, sexual assault, and rape. - The UK has banned a TV commercial starring Pamela Anderson writhing in a bikini, covered in what looks like champagne froth. In the ad for web hosting service CrazyDomains.co.uk, Anderson and another sexy woman are depicted in a boardroom filled with men, one of whom is fantasizing about the two dancing in bikinis as they’re splashed with frothy liquid. The ad — which features an icky ejaculation pun at the end! — was initially approved to air after 9 p.m., but received several complaints. It has since been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority for being “sexist” and “degrading towards women.” [Guardian UK]

I love everything about the Parkham Women’s Institute, a group of old ladies in the UK who got together to hear a local speaker, retired sea captain Colin Darch, and dressed up in costume for the occasion. Seeing as the talk was about pirates, they wore eye patches and peg legs, and carried swords and fake parrots.
The only problem is that as Captain Darch began speaking, the ladies realized they had it all wrong: Darch had been kidnapped by gun-toting Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean and held captive for 47 days before ransom was paid. He was there to speak about his new book on the terror, not-so-unclearly titled Capture By Somali Pirates And Other Events At Sea. Keep reading »
