Audiences Do Not Want To Pay To Watch Jennifer Aniston On The Big Screen

It needs to be said: Jennifer Aniston literally cannot carry a movie. Her latest, “The Switch,” bombed in its opening weekend, making only $8.1 million at the box office. This is significantly less than the opening weekend numbers for “The Bounty Hunter,” that horrifyingly bad movie she made with Gerard Butler, which was panned by critics and hated by audiences. That movie made over $20 million in its first three days and was considered a big ol’ failure. Aniston’s other recent films have done piss poor too: “Love Happens” made only $8 million its first weekend, while “Management” did less than $400,000. “He’s Just Not That Into You” was Aniston’s last big money maker, but she was only one player in an ensemble; “The Break-Up” was the last movie headlined by Aniston (alongside Vince Vaughn) to be considered a true success, making $39.2 million its opening weekend. We’re just a few weeks away from September, which is terrifying because where the hell did the time go? But also nice because all the hooligans will be back in school and, at least between the hours of 8 and 3 p.m., the streets will be safe. And the movie theaters and malls will be empty and the beaches pristine and quiet. Not that anything cool ever happens before 3 p.m. anyway, but it’s somehow comforting that the kids will be at their desks, filling their little minds with knowledge. This has nothing to do with movies really, except that now you can go to matinees and there won’t be anyone throwing popcorn at the back of your head. Probably. This week, go catch “The Switch,” “Lottery Ticket,” “Piranha 3D,” or “”Nanny McPhee Returns.” Keep reading »

What’s Up With All The Sperm Donation Movies?

Last night, I saw a trailer for “The Switch,” which comes out August 20th. The rom-com is about two good friends, played by Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman. Jennifer has decided to have a baby on her own and throws a party to celebrate her upcoming insemination. At the party, not only is Jennifer’s sperm donor there, but Jason’s character gets so drunk that, while in the bathroom, he pours out the sperm donor’s, uh, donation and replaces it with his own. This is the third big movie to come out about sperm donation in the past year. It also was once titled “The Baster,” which ewww, is not an image any of us needed. Keep reading »
