Funny Or Die Imagines What Sofia Coppola's Live-Action "The Little Mermaid" Might Look Like
Why So Sad, Ariel?

First of all, Sofia Coppola really isĀ directing a live-action film version of “The Little Mermaid.” Secondly, I don’t think it’s going to be that far off from what this Funny or Die spoof — starring AnnaSofia Robb and Evan Peters — presents. A melancholy hipster romance, set to great music with lots of late-afternoon sun glare? Yep, looks and sounds like a Sofia Coppola film! (That’s not a diss — I’ll be first in line to see the real thing.) [i09]

Sofia Coppola May Direct A Live-Action “The Little Mermaid”

  • Sofia Coppola is in talks to direct a live-action adaption of “The Little Mermaid.” It’s time to dig out the old mermaid tail costumes from “Splash,” I guess. [The Hollywood Reporter]
  • So, Miley Cyrus’ tour bus burst into flames. Fortunately, no one was hurt. [Page Six]
  • The toy company GoldieBlox has settled a copyright infringement suit filed by the Beastie Boys for using their song “Girls” in a commercial. As part of the settlement, GoldieBlox must give a percentage of its revenue to charities that support STEM (science/technology/engineering/math) education for girls. [Gothamist]

Little Mermaid Theater Ipads
Put down your damn iPads!

When I heard “The Little Mermaid” was coming back to theaters, I immediately started sobbing with joy and planning the outfit I would wear to go see it (something subtle like a flared skirt with green sequins and a seashell bra). There was just no way I would ever miss the opportunity to see one of my favorite Disney movies on the big screen. Even if I got food poisoning the day of the screening, or there was a fire in the theater, I would tough it out, and I would sing along with “Under The Sea,” and I would be jealous of Ariel’s hair, and I would struggle to reconcile my strong feminist values with a movie about a woman giving up her voice for a man she doesn’t even know, and it would be glorious.

But as I watched Disney’s promotional video about the release, I discovered there actually was one thing that might keep me from seeing “The Little Mermaid” in theaters: if everyone was instructed to bring their iPads to the movie theater and play with them the whole time instead of, you know, watching the freakin’ movie. Ariel from "The Little Mermaid" photo
  • Hollywood’s obsession with making any and every movie 3D is totally stupid … except when it comes to beloved films from my childhood. Following the success of “The Lion King” in 3D, Disney will release “Beauty & The Beast” and “The Little Mermaid.” Plus, Pixar will release “Finding Nemo” and “Monster’s Inc.” in 3D. Blake Lively’s New Shade Has “Under The Sea” Running Through Her Head, Too

“It’s for the film ‘Hick.’ I thought [my character] needed red hair. It helps when you’re playing a role, when I don’t feel like myself. And I don’t really feel like myself with red hair… I feel like Ariel.”

Blake Lively explains that she hasn’t gone strawberry blonde permanently and that the new shade is for a movie. As for “The Little Mermaid” comparison, glad to hear that she saw it, too. Perhaps wearing a turquoise dress (Ariel’s signature color) wasn’t the best choice. The parallel wouldn’t have been as obvious if she were rocking an LBD. [People] Keep reading »
