The Daily Squee: We Need To Talk About This Baby Anteater

I will confess that I’m not sure how I feel about anteaters. They don’t have the same neotenous appearance or demeanor that, say, kittens and baby pandas doo. Yet there’s something adorable that can’t be denied about their itty-bitty ears and their big, long snout. This critter here is MJ, a southern tamandu  born last month at the Staten Island Zoo to his mom, DJ. And if you think this Instagram video of MJ sticking his tongue out at you is cute, wait until you see these pictures of MJ riding on DJ’s back. It’s enough to make you wish for an ant infestation just so these two can come over for dinner. (OK, not really.) [Instagram.com/StatenIslandZoo]

The Daily Squee: Exhausted Meerkat Tries To Resist Sleep

ZZZZZZ

I'm not sleeping...I'm WIDE AWAKE!

A very sleepy meerkat at the a zoo  in Dortmund, Germany was caught trying and failing miserably to keep his eyes open. This is exactly what happens to me every single time I start to watch a movie on Netflix after the late hour of 9p.m. I’m out like a light, even though when my boyfriend calls me out on it, I insist that I am WIDE AWAKE. A word of advice: don’t fight it, guy. Denial only makes you more tired. Night, night. [Daily Picks & Flicks]

The Daily Squee: Adorable Little Penguin Chases Grown Man Adorably

You Can Run, But You Can't Hide

Being chased around the zoo by a penguin is either someone’s life dream or someone’s nightmare. (For me it’s a dream, obviously.) Fortunately this African penguin chasing his zookeeper around the Masue Vogel Aviary Park in Japan looks utterly harmless. Who knew penguins could run (er, waddle) so fast? I guess that comes in handy when a seal is trying to eat them. Run, little buddy, run! [Neatorama]

The Daily Squee: Watch A Poodle Protect His Baby Sister From The Evil Blow Dryer
Blow Dryers Are Scary

I would have enjoyed this video if it were just a poodle and the baby. That’s enough squeeness for me. But add a blow dryer to the mix and you’ve got all sorts of excitement, like fluff blowing in the wind and a poodle’s protective instincts kicking in. [Daily Picks & Flicks]

“The Notebook” Recreated By Kittens Is Almost As Good As The Ryan Gosling Version

let's be birds!
Who needs human love when you have cats!?

“The Notebook” may be a favorite this time of year, but after 10 years (yes, 10!), it’s due for an upgrade. Like, say, kittens recreating its greatest moments. Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams may be easy on the eyes, but I guarantee that this feline version of the film will leave you much happier than the end of the original movie. Meow! [Laughing Squid]

The Daily Squee: Meet Xander, The Blind Pug Who Became A Therapy Dog

10 Adorbs Facts About Pugs
Pug
We're crazy for pugs! Here's why. Read More »

Today in “Things That Make You Go Awwwww“: the story of Xander, a little pug from Klamath Falls, Oregon, who lost his eyes in an accident at age 1. Xander was living at an animal shelter when he charmed his way into the hearts of two shelter volunteers, who couldn’t resist taking him home and making him part of their family. It wasn’t long before his new owners, Marcie and Rodney Beedy, realized their pet had a special gift for lifting people’s spirits wherever he went. They enrolled Xander in American Kennel Club’s Canine Good Citizen Program, and after three weeks of training, he became a certified therapy dog. Despite his lack of eyesight, Xander is thriving in his new role, always seeming to know exactly what kind of nurturing people need, whether he’s at a school, hospital, or nursing home. “A lot of times he’ll hear a child crying at an event and he’s bolted several times, at least 500 feet over to this child to comfort them,” says Marcie, who wears a bell around her leg to let Xander know she’s near. Check out a couple adorable pics of Xander in action after the jump, and follow his mission of love and comfort on Facebook! Keep reading »

The Daily Squee: Baby Wombats Get Belly Rubs

Scratch, Scratch, Scratch, Scratch

As soon as I started dating an Australian, I began fantasizing about all the adorable animals Down Under who would someday become my friends. Koalas! Roos! Wombats! Sadly, this American was quickly informed that all of those wild animals are indeed wild animals and seldom seen, let alone snuggled. (Kangaroos, I am told, are very common, but are huge and dangerous to humans.) So it gives me hope whenever I watch a video such as this: baby wombats enjoying belly rubs! Also, scurrying around like toddlers on Red Bull! (These little guys live in some kind of a zoo or shelter, which I am obviously Googling immediately.) Thank you, Internet, for further proof that every species loves a good belly scratch. [YouTube via Laughing Squid]

The Daily Squee: Watch This Puppy Try To Rescue His Own Reflection

Woof!

This pup has looked in the mirror for the first time and he is so confused about what he sees! It’s almost as if he’s worried about setting his “twin” free! I feel kind of bad for laughing at him, but there’s really nothing cuter than a golden retriever puppy.  [Except a Lucca puppy. -- Lucca] [Jezebel]

The Daily Squee: A Skateboarding Cat Is Just As Amazing As She Sounds

Didga Has Skills!

Meet Didga the cat, skateboarder extraordinaire. Watch Didga around her Australian hometown on her board, jumping over dogs and looking generally unfazed at just how absurd it is that she’s a cat on a skateboard. How her owner managed to train her to do this is beyond me, but I am all kinds of impressed. Unless, of course, this is some crazy Photoshop job and cats on skateboards don’t exist. But Happie the goat knows how to skateboard, so why not Didga? [Refinery29]
