This Sunday, June 28, at 10 p.m., HBO is premiering a new show, “Hung.” Guess what it’s about? A guy who turns to prostitution to make a living. Step aside, “Belle de Jour.” Get out of here, “The Girlfriend Experience.” Call-girls are, like, so 2008. 2009 is all about guys who sell their bodies to make ends meet. The dramatic comedy stars Thomas Jane as Ray Drecker, an all-star high school athlete who ends up as a high school basketball coach whose wife dumps him for her dermatologist. Casting about for something to do with his life and make some money, Drecker takes note of his well-endowed physique and sets about renting it out by the hour. Uh, “The Sopranos” it ain’t. It’s “Boogie Nights” meets the recession! Are you going to tune in or tune it out?

Those of you who’ve seen Steven Soderbergh’s “The Girlfriend Experience” will know a little bit about Sasha Grey, who plays the main character. Those of you who are porn enthusiasts will know a hell of a lot more, seeing as Grey has been in more than 160 porn flicks over the past three years.  From “Teenage Whores 3” to “Anal Cavity Search 6,” Sasha’s done it all. (Or at least most of it.)

But while Grey’s been a porn world bad ass for a while, starring in a Soderbergh film has, uh, exposed her to a more mainstream and art house audience. It’s also opened her up to a s**t storm of criticism for participating in what many consider to be an exploitative industry.

By now, you’ve probably heard of “The Girlfriend Experience,” Steven Soderbergh’s new movie about a high-end call girl who charges $2,000 for the privilege of letting guys pretend she’s their girlfriend and who’s played by porn star Sasha Grey. But have you heard of “The Boyfriend Experience”? The crew over at Totally Sketch has created a highly amusing faux trailer for the nonexistent sequel to the GFE feature. This time, the storyline focuses on a nice young woman who has a total jerk for a boyfriend. And guess how much he charges by the hour to ignore you, eat your food, and make a mess everywhere? It’s Friday, and the weather reports are predicting rain, rain, rain all through Memorial Day weekend. Very sad, but this news does automatically increase your chances of heading to a movie theater sometime over the next three days. So what should you see? Check out the new trailer for Steven Soderbergh’s latest movie, “The Girlfriend Experience.” Starring adult film star Sasha Grey as a Manhattan-based, $2,000-an-hour call girl, “The Girlfriend Experience” seeks to peek behind the curtain at what it’s really like to have sex for a living. The “girlfriend experience,” or “GFE,” as it’s known on Craigslist, is a type of escorting in which the woman offers services, as it were, more akin to what a girlfriend would offer than, say, a so-called “hooker,” whether that’s kissing, companionship, or conversation. While several reviewers who screened an unfinished version of the movie at this year’s Sundance Film Festival said the movie felt “cold,” and some questioned Soderbergh’s pick of an adult actress in the starring role, the trailer looks pretty awesome. I’m a Soderbergh fan, and while this movie may or may not accurately reflect the reality of the upper-echelon call girl experience, it sure does look pretty. [Buzzfeed]
