Melissa Leo Runs Own “For Your Consideration” Ads. But Will It Ruin Her Oscar Chances?

Melissa Leo was uh-maze-zing in “The Fighter” as a mother/manager who sticks by her former-wrestler son even when it’s pretty clear that he’s a junkie who screws up everything. Leo won the Golden Globe and SAG Awards for Best Supporting Actress for the performance. But I guess she’s a little nervous about the Oscars? Apparently, Leo placed ads yesterday in publications like Deadline, that Academy Award voters read. She paid for the ads herself. “I took matters into my own hands. I knew what I was doing and told my representation how earnest I was about this idea,” she said. “I had never heard of any actor taking out an ad as themselves and I wanted to give it a shot.”

But the two ads she ran are terribly cheesetastic. Apparently, she thinks the Academy will be swayed by fur coats? Keep reading »

Catherine Hardwicke Was Told She Couldn’t Direct “The Fighter” Because She’s A Woman

“I couldn’t get an interview even though my last movie made $400 million. I was told it had to be directed by a man — am I crazy? []The Fighter‘] is about action, it’s about boxing, so a man has to direct it. … But they let a man direct ‘Sex and the City’ or any girly movie you’ve ever heard of.”

— “Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke exposes sexism in Hollywood against female directors and this notion that they can only direct certain types of films. The directorial job on “The Fighter” went to David O. Russell and Hardwicke agreed he did a good job. But it’s complete BS, as she said, that she was told “The Fighter” had to be directed by a man. Christian Bale Really Wanted To Do His Own Stunts In “The Fighter”

“I just got up there and I went, ‘I’m jumping’ … I’ve jumped from three-story buildings in my own life after bad parties and stuff. The insurance came around … and they were just begging me not to.”

Christian Bale says he was annoyed that he wasn’t allowed to do his own stunts in “The Fighter” because of insurance concerns. He does have a point. I mean, he did lose an insane amount of weight to play aging boxer/crackhead Dicky Eklund, which isn’t the healthiest thing ever. On the other hand, uh, when did he jump out of a third floor window? Trailer Park: “The Fighter,” “The Tourist,” “The Chronicles of Narnia,” And “The Tempest”

This week’s movies are like that period in music when bands all started putting “The” in front of a noun and making that the name of their band. I guess it sounds like more of a declaration or something. Or a claiming of whatever particular noun. Whatever it is, it’s pissing me off. Just kidding. I could care less. Go see a movie. Or don’t. I can’t tell you how to live your life. But call your mother. She worries. Keep reading »
