There’s kind of a random op-ed in the Femail section of The Daily Mail today called “How Can Lily Allen Be Chanel’s Latest Fashion Muse?” that bemoans Karl Lagerfeld’s apparent fascination with the singer, whom the writer refers to as looking “worse for wear” in the past. It’s curious for several reasons: The paper is known for publishing as much as it possibly can about the real girl vs. models debate—they’re always quick to lay it on thick when it comes to busting airbrushers and acquiring quotes from magazine editors who vow to fight too tiny sample sizes, and they even have a regular feature where they photograph their writers trying on designer clothes worn by celebrities to see how they translate in real life. So why would they bother with a piece by a writer who’s all pissed off about Lily Allen being the latest Chanel girl because she’s not fashion enough?

Never heard of British actress Ophelia Lovibond? You will. This young lady has a whole mess of movies coming out in 2010, and she’s got some kind of Audrey Tautou/Audrey Hepburn/Zooey Deschanel thing going on that people just go nuts for. Judging by what she wore to the premiere of “Nowhere Boy” in London this week, we also have the feeling she’ll have the privilege of ending up on a few worst-dressed lists at some point, too. Would I wear this silky blue, schoolgirl-inspired dress for a red carpet appearance? Eh, no. But then again no one is asking me to walk alongside Kristin Scott Thomas (her costar). It’s a little cray-cray, no doubt, but she looks kind of cute and refreshing. Love the fun matching earrings, plus she gets mega bonus points for thinking outside of the blowout/Herve Leger mini-dress box. Nice job, kid!

This week, fashion police across the interwebs ragged on the see-through t-shirt with black bra underneath one-two punch Katie Holmes wore to the 16th Women In Hollywood Tribute in Beverly Hills. We’re not always the biggest fans of Mrs. Cruise’s attempts at haute couture, but you can’t say the sheer trend isn’t major right now, and if ever there was a classy way to wear it, this is most definitely the way to go. Besides, she is pulling off the decent exposure look far more than British “It Girl” Charley Uchea did recently. We’re still reeling from that one.

So the Fashion Police have a bone to pick with Rachel Bilson, seen here attending the Salvatore Ferragamo fashion show in Milan, asking what’s up with this “funky dress” and dissing her “lace gloves.” Here’s where we stand on the matter: Bilson is a total hottie who can get away with fashion murder, and we think it’s refreshing to see a well-tailored suit that shows off her figure in a more subtle way, as opposed to the usual starlet in flashy strapless bondage dress look. The gloves are actually part of the sheer shirt she’s wearing underneath, and it looks edgy and modern to let longish shirt sleeves peep out from a jacket. In short, back off you prosecutors, this woman is innocent.

Pink has a fierce new trapeze act in her new show (here in L.A.), and, on one hand, she is simply attempting to rock a trend that is so hot right now: After all, celebs just love to wear pasties! Rihanna does a great job with her Nippies, but as much as we look at the positives here, we’re afraid we just can’t help you out Pink. If you get arrested, don’t come crying to us to bail you out. Oh you Fashion Police! You’re so ... predictable. Of course they hate the way Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen look at this Opening Ceremony party in Japan and added them to their lineup, but we beg to differ. First off, let’s think of the context here: like it or not, Opening Ceremony is a hipper-than-thou avant-garde kind of boutique that’s all about experimental fashion. (If you don’t believe me watch this highly entertaining video starring Chloe Sevigny.) Second, this is Tokyo, where lots of young folk pop similar “fun” headgear on their heads the minute they step out of the office in the evening. Believe me, they just earned, like, 10 million cool points from their Japanese fan base. Thirdly, they just look downright cute. Today, we feel the need to rescue “90210” star Shenae Grimes from lockdown over at E!, where her outfit has officially been dubbed “heinous.” Sure, maybe not everyone is enough of a risk taker to rock leather, a floral print and lacy tights at the same time, but she looks healthy, happy and cute, the outfit is totally appropriate for a young chick to wear to an edgy Nylon mag party in Hollywood, and the nods to the ‘80s are bang on trend.
