Mike Cassesso and MaiLien Le were all set to be married on the steps of the Jefferson Memorial this Saturday, but alas, the ongoing government shutdown got in the way of those plans, as government buildings and national sites like the memorial are closed until Congress gets its damn act together. When Stephen Colbert heard about the couple’s plight, he decided to help them out by offering to conduct the ceremony himself on to “The Colbert Report.” The ”2013 Government Shutdown Wedding of the Century” was a lovely affair, complete with music, bachelor/bachelorette parties, and … Mandy Patinkin!? SO AWESOME. Watch the full shebang (in two parts) above. [Gawker]

Stephen Colbert’s mom Lorna passed away last week at the age of 92. After a brief hiatus, Colbert returned to his anchor seat at “The Colbert Report” and opened the show with this beautifully worded, heartfelt tribute to her. “When you watch the show, if you like me,” he said, “that’s because of my mom.” Watch the clip above, but keep a tissue handy — you’re definitely going to need it. Style Rookie blogger and fashion world phenom Tavi Gevinson was on “The Colbert Report” last night,to discuss her latest feat: the publication of Rookie Yearbook One, a compendium of some of the best writing and stories from the first year of Gevinson’s online magazine Rookie. Colbert was a bit in awe of his youngest-ever guest, and queried her for style advice. What might appeal to a mass audience, he asked? Gevinson recommended that he give himself a boy band haircut and carry around a puppy, because “there were some really great photos of the members of One Direction modeling puppies, so I feel like if you carried around a puppy and had boy band hair, you would be set.”
While Tavi admitted that she may have fallen behind on her English homework, she still proves that she’s a total champ and wise beyond her years. Let’s be friends? [The Colbert Report]
“Colbert Report” host Stephen Colbert knows probably better than anyone that in order to succeed you have to work with the best. That’s why on his show Wednesday night he said goodbye to his latest crop of interns, and brought on a new, shall we say, more qualified set: the gold medal-winning women’s gymnastic team. That’s right: Gabby, McKayla, Kyla, Aly and Jordyn — along with Aly’s very excitable mom — all made an appearance. And they were tasked with the very important job of making sure Stephen had his pen. You know how Stephen can get about his pens. [Comedy Central]
Last night, Olivia Wilde was on the “The Colbert Report” to promote her new film, “People Like Us.” While that movie looks like a total snooze and I can’t co-sign on Chris Pine’s stupid eyebrows, Olivia seems like a totally rad lady. She stumped for Obama, wore her Dogs Against Romney pin, and challenged Colbert to an acting contest to see “who could act harder.” [Comedy Central]
- Better late than never: it is from Monday night’s show, but I really wanted to post Stephen Colbert coming to the defense of “radical feminist” Catholic nuns. Love you so hard, Stephen. [The Colbert Report]
- On how Republicans in the House of Representatives are blocking abortion access for our servicewomen. Apparently even if you’re willing to give your life for your own country, that’s not reason enough to get basic women’s health care. (Yes, basic health care: one in three women will have an abortion in her lifetime … including women in the military). [Mother Jones]
- At Sunday night’s Tony Awards, “Porgy & Bess” star Audra McDonald became the first-ever woman of color to win five Tonys (and only the third woman ever). [Racialicious]

God, I love Charlize Theron. She hit up “The Colbert Report” last night and gives as good as she gets. There’s the usual movie promotion blah-blah-blah about “Snow White and the Huntsman,” but she and Stephen also took the conversation to an interesting place while discussing beauty and narcissism. “I don’t think narcissists are just vain. I think they are obsessed with beauty because it symbolizes power and self-worth,” she said. “It’s sad this story was written in 18-something-something and this story still resonates.” It’s interesting to hear one of the most gorgeous women on the planet to voice an opinion like this. The Frisky has kept you up-to-date on what Bill O’Reilly and other conservatives think about health insurers being told to cover women’s birth control without co-pays — i.e. will Blue Cross/Blue Shield cover mani/pedis next? Thankfully, Stephen Colbert has also weighed in and it’s a good thing, too. How else would we know that birth control is exactly what killed the dinosaurs? [The Colbert Report] Keep reading »
Stephen Colbert is always on the lookout for injustice against menfolk. And where do men suffer the most than in the field of genital cleaning products? Women have long enjoyed empowering cleaning agents marketed to their dirty vaginas. But the poor, dirty penis? Shamefully ignored. What nerve!
When Summer’s Eve douche products unveiled their new “Hail To The V” commercials last week, Colbert could not take it any longer. This injustice has to stop. Thank God men now have Fresh Pine Dick Scrub so that you, like your lady counterparts, can screw around with what nature intended. May you never feel embarrassed about that not-so-fresh feeling ever again. [Colbert Nation] Keep reading »

|Pap Smears at Walgreens|
Did you know you could get your annual Pap smear at Walgreens? Yes! The stirrups are right over in aisle two next to the Pond’s skin cream and the Bonne Bell lip gloss. And breast exams? Right near the AAA batteries, please.
At least that’s what you might think if you watch “Fox & Friends” and believe every word they say. They were trying to justify the Republicans’ attempts to defund family planning money from Planned Parenthood because, duh, all women’s reproductive health needs can be met at the local Walgreens.
Stephen Colbert did a hilarious bit about this the other night on “The Colbert Report,” which you simply must watch. (Language NSFW, use headphones.) But now a group of feminist activists are planning actions to highlight this ignorance. Yup, you guessed it — they’re asking people to go to Walgreens and ask for a Pap smear. Keep reading »
