Whitney Port is the only celebrity designer we can think of at the moment who seriously paid her dues in the fashion business. Over the years she has interned at W and the fashion trade paper Women’s Wear Daily, worked as a contributor at Teen Vogue, and as anyone who’s switched from “The Hills” to “The City” knows, beat the pavement for Diane von Furstenberg and for Kelly Cutrone‘s now famous PR firm, People’s Revolution, which let’s face it, is no cakewalk. Now that she’s wrapped the Whitney Eve Spring 2010 collection and “The City” season finale (watch the entire season at MTV.com if you missed it), she took five to sit down and talk some fash smack with us.
You didn’t watch last night’s episode of “The City,” did you? Yeah, I didn’t think so—the show is a bit of a snooze fest. But this season there is one big, huge saving grace—Roxy Olin. The producers brought her in to replace Whitney’s BFF from last year, Erin, who was too nice for her own good and not nearly dramatic enough to hold our attention for more than 10 seconds. So the producers plucked Roxy to be Whitney’s new bestie—Roxy supposedly is a friend from grade school who decided to move to New York to embark on a fashion career. And yes, you have seen her before. Her papa produces “Brothers and Sisters” and her mama, Patricia Wettig, stars in it, so she’s had a guest spot on the show as Michelle, a role she reprised last week. Oh, and she was also on an episode of “The Hills.” Remember the first time Lauren Conrad met Stephanie Pratt and got into a fight with her and her friend? Yep, the friend was Roxy. Sneaky trick, producers. She obviously wasn’t cast for either role—both are totally authentic. That’s sarcasm, people.
What are you doing tonight at 10 pm? Oh, you’ll be here with me liveblogging the season premieres of MTV’s “The Hills” and “The City”? That sounds awesome. Click through to see the latest commentary on Kristin Cavallari‘s general meanness, Heidi and Spencer‘s general inanity, and Whitney Port‘s general blahness. And please, by all means, chime in!
Even though last season of “The City” wasn’t so great, I’m still rooting for Whitney Port. I hoped that season two would be a little juicier. But now that MTV has released this extended trailer, I dunno. Here’s what’s happening this season: Whitney says goodbye to Diane von Furstenberg to design her own clothing line. Olivia goes to work at Elle and pisses all her coworkers off. Kelly Cutrone gets in some good one-liners. Whitney beefs with her glass-half-empty new coworker at People’s Revolution. Jay is gone and has been replaced by some bozo in a suit and tie named Freddy. He and Whitney obviously have zero chemistry and coincidentally the New York Post is reporting today that their relationship is already dunzo. So, things aren’t looking so hot. But I’ll probably end up watching anyway because that is how strong “reality” television’s hold is on me.
Just when I had convinced myself that I actually enjoyed the first season of MTV’s “The City,” Lauren, Heidi, Spencer, Audrina, and the rest of “The Hills” crew are back, like the back-stabbing best friends I never had. The season premiere featured a tearful Heidi and Lauren reunion, and Spencer beating up a kid who dared to tell Heidi he saw Spencer hitting on a female bartender. And what’s this I see on the season teaser…?
By now you’ve probably watched an episode of “The City” or have spent at least 10 seconds wondering why such do-nothing people get their own TV shows. One of those do-nothings is Olivia Palermo, Whitney Port’s “co-worker” at Diane von Furstenberg and her fellow “City” castmate. She’s also who I so lovingly refer to as C-Face, as I think she is possibly one of the most vapidly coniving people every on television. That said, outside of the New York social scene, Olivia is not well-known at all, despite acting as if she’s the bee’s knees. So who is this creature that our hero Kelly Cutrone literally guffawed over? All the info, after the jump.
You probably know Kelly Cutrone from her appearances on “The Hills” and now “The City,” but there’s so much more to her than wearing black, yelling at people, and giving advice about men.
1. Her dream job is “Being paid one million dollars a year to be a teacher in a village school in South India.”
2. She went to Syracuse University.
3. She has a young daughter named Ava.
So, exciting stuff. Tonight on MTV both “Bromance” and “The City” premiere. And I am going to be liveblogging the latter, starting at 10pm EST. But before then, I thought we should probably prep you on the cast of “The City”—while we already know Whitney from her amazing work, cough, on “The Hills,” the rest of the cast is pretty unfamiliar. Let’s find out who “The City”‘s versions of Lauren, Audrina, and Heidi are, according to their bios on MTV.com…
Whitney Port, formerly of “The Hills,” moved to New York a couple months ago to work for designer Diane von Furstenburg. Come Dec. 29, she’s back on MTV in “The City,” which is “The Hills” on the other coast. We hope this doesn’t ruin Whitney for us. She always seemed like the smartest, most-together cast member on “The Hills.” From the short preview above, it seems that Whitney will hang with socialite Olivia Palermo and be fought over by two cute boys.
