I am prefacing this review with a note about a hilarious argument (well, I thought it was) Jessica and I just had. Jessica seems to believe that A) body wash is not the same as “soap” and that B) you cannot get clean with products that are considered non-soaps (as this one is). For the record, I am a body wash user. I don’t use bar soap. I consider body wash just as good as your average bar of soap and, I suspect, some of the body wash brands I use have “soap” in them, while others don’t, though I’ve clearly never paid attention.

So what exactly is “soap” and what does “soap-free” mean? Chemically speaking, soap is made when fatty acid salts (from plants or animals) are combined with an alkaline solution like lye. Soap-free products are detergents that do the same thing as soap but are made from plants with natural high saponin levels. Or something like that. So, basically, if you’re someone who purposefully does not use soap products, you’re likely doing so because you’re not down with harsh chemicals, which can be drying to the skin and aren’t as eco-friendly.

Anyway, read onward for Jessica’s review of The Body Shop’s Spiced Pumpkin Wash, which she would use in addition to bar soap, but those of us who don’t differentiate between soap and soap-free, would use on its own. Keep reading »

It’s the least wonderful time of the year. My skin is dry year-round, but fall and winter are the worst of the worst (as in, before writing this post I went to the ladies’ room to slater on face cream for the second time today). I don’t just have to worry about keeping the skin on my face moisturized (but not greasy!) %u2014 it’s when I suffer chapped, flaky, sensitive skin and pretty much carry lotion on me 24/7 to cope. Win This! Sweet Lemon Products From The Body Shop

The Body Shop has long backed good causes — remember last year’s safe sex lip balm? — and this month the company launched a new campaign in an effort to raise awareness about the sex trafficking of children and young people. Through its LemonAid effort, The Body Shop will donate $15,000 to organizations working to stop sex trafficking, and we can’t think of a better cause.

The LemonAid campaign coincides with the debut of The Body Shop’s new Sweet Lemon line. Made with lemon seed oil from fruit handpicked on the Italian Riviera (how glamorous!), these bath and body products should keep you and your skin refreshed with lots of anti-oxidants, vitamin C, and a fresh citrus scent.

WIN THIS! We’re giving away a set of Sweet Lemon products from The Body Shop, but you have to work if you want it. In the comments, tell us your best tip for waking up in the morning by 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, April 1. We’ll pick our favorite response and announce the winner on Friday, April 2. You must live in the U.S. or Canada to win. Good luck!

UPDATE: The winner is bexbales for this comment:

I keep two spoons in the freezer. While I am waiting for my coffee to brew in the morning I press the cold spoons to my eyes. Literally no matter how sleep deprived I am, the cool sensation wakes me right up and any trace of puffiness or dark circles disappears. I always end up looking fully energized!

What A Dame!

The founder of The Body Shop, an international chain of bath & beauty products, Dame Anita Roddick, has sadly passed, but she also passed on an estimated 100 million dollars to charity. That’s a whole lotta bars of soap! Dame Roddick was suddenly struck with a brain hemorrhage last September, a complication of the Hepatitis C she contracted from a blood transfusion at age 64. But by then, she had given away all of her hard earned fortune to environmental charities, Third World debt, and human rights organizations. The successful English businesswoman died penniless and left nothing to her family who upheld their mother’s generous final wishes. “They’ve already given us everything in terms of love and support,” said Sam, her youngest daughter, who runs a body shop of her own — sex boutique Coco de Mer. So Dame Roddick, the woman who spent decades grooming men and women, will now, even in her legacy, be sprucing up the world. [Daily Mail]
