Considering that Ashley Hebert‘s season of “The Bachelorette” has been a mess so far, what with a sociopath derailing the proceedings for weeks, I’m pretty impressed by Ashley’s final three guys. Even more surprising, in last night’s episode, Ashley cut it down to two—and they are exactly the pair I’ve found most appealing throughout this process. Who am I talking about? Debate This: Do You Need Your Parents To Approve Of Your Significant Other?

On last night’s episode of “The Bachelorette,” the four remaining bachelors took Ashley home to meet their families. You can read all about the details of the episode in Kate’s recap, but the thing that stuck out most to me was the fact that each of the guys made sure to emphasize just how essential it was that their families approved of Ashley. And if they didn’t? Each dude seem to imply that not getting the thumbs up from mom, dad, and their siblings would make pursuing a more serious relationship impossible.

This was fascinating to me. There’s no doubt that having your parents like — and even love — your significant other is a wonderful thing, but I don’t know that it’s essential for me. Keep reading »

I have a random pet peeve when it comes to reality TV—when an element of a show becomes so routine that the contestants know it’s coming and start referring to it by a single word. (See: “makeovers” on “America’s Next Top Model” and “restaurant wars” on “Top Chef.”) For weeks, we’ve been hearing about “hometowns” on “The Bachelorette.” For those not in the know, that’s when the title lady/guy has whittled the field down to their final four, and they travel to each contestant’s home to see what their life is like and meet their family. This week, Ashley Hebert‘s long-awaited hometowns finally happened.

Dragon Boat Racing Is Having A Moment

A week and a half ago, I had never heard of dragon boat racing. But then, for a group date, “Bachelorette” Ashley Hebert had the dudes vying for her love head out into Hong Kong, assemble a team, and join her on the beach for a dragon boat race. I cheered as Mickey and Ames paddled like pros, and laughed as Ben and Constantine remarked that they were being “smoked like salmon, bro.”

Who knew “The Bachelorette” could teach us such important lessons about grammar? (If you haven’t watched yet, SPOILER ALERT.) The drama of this week’s episode all stemmed from that moment when Bentley Williams told Ashley Hebert that he’d like to leave the show with a “dot, dot, dot.” Well, this week, Ashley finally got her period. (As in the end of the sentence, not her monthly flow.) But not after losing one of her prime contenders and pissing off, oh, almost all of the guys. In this new column, we will share some of our most out-there theories about what’s really going on in the celeb-u-verse. Now, keep in mind that none of this is based on fact or even on the testimony of anonymous sources. They are purely hunches, and we could be totally and completely wrong. That said, we would not be super surprised if, some day, it came out that a few of our theories were right.

I believe I’ve uncovered the hidden agenda of this season of “The Bachelorette.” Ashley Hebert doesn’t give a fig about finding love. And she doesn’t actually want to become a dentist, even though she’s in school for it. With his caustic personality and kajillions of dollars, Larry David is not someone I would like to have as an enemy — so Bentley Williams had better watch out! Both Larry and “Bachelorette” Ashley Herbert were guests on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” last night and Larry couldn’t stop himself from interjecting during Ashley’s interview. Ashley, of course, had her heart broken by Bentley, who pretended to be interested in her while also trash-talking her on camera. Sociopath Bentley has managed to hijack Ashley Hebert‘s season of “The Bachelorette” so far. The reason he gave for being so miserable with Ashley? That he was hoping “The Bachelorette” would be Emily Maynard, the beautiful Southern belle who Brad Womack chose in the final episode last season. Well, now the woman of Bentley’s dreams has weighed in on his behavior in a video blog. “I’m not totally convinced that had the ‘Bachelorette’ been me, he wouldn’t have said, ‘Oh, I wish it was Ashley.’ He clearly had an agenda for being on the show and it wasn’t to fall in love,” Emily said. “What goes around, comes around. If I were Bentley, I would certainly be sleeping with one eye open.” True dat. [People]
