Do Not Want: Thakoon Twisted Layered Leggings

Look, I know we’re always looking for new pantsventions (that’s pants inventions) to cover the lower halves of our bodies, but really, this is just not right. Thakoon is a bonafide genius when it comes to structured style, but we’ll definitely be skipping these “layered” leggings, which are just a $378 way to look like a total schlub. I guarantee, I can recreate the Thakoon look with a couple of off-the-rack items from my local Kmart, but no one would ever mistake it for high-fashion. But if you’ve got an extra $400 to spare, by all means, have at ‘em. [$378, Shopbop] Keep reading »

Dress Like Michelle Obama, For Way Less

It was only a matter of time before someone wanted to capitalize on the First Lady fashion effect, and when it comes to doing it accessibly, K-Mart has turned out to be that retailer. If your wardrobe aspirations include looking just like Mobama, head to K-Mart and pick up either a copy of her J.Crew blue skirt or a close replica of Thakoon’s prints, at a price — $13 and $6, respectively — that is extremely affordable. Thakoon Spring 2010: MObama-Worthy?

Get First Lady Michelle Obama on your side (or in one of your dresses), and your business is guaranteed to boom. That’s what happened to some of MObama’s favorite labels, like Thakoon. So, is it just us, or does Thakoon’s spring 2010 presentation look like it’s playing pretty hard to attract Michelle and all her fashion fans? (Not that we would blame him! Or J.Crew, or Jason Wu, or … )

One half of the collection took things to a wilder side with mish-mashing prints and loose-fitting resort wear for the jet-set crowd. Yet, the rest of the pieces seemed to directly channel the First Lady’s preferences for floral prints, simple lines of boat necks and long-sleeved shifts, and draped cocktail dresses meant for showing off those famous arms. Think some of these designs have already made their way into Michelle’s closet? [Telegraph.co.uk] Keep reading »

What, No One Wants To Dress Like Michelle Obama Today?

The Thakoon dress Michelle Obama wore on the final night of last year’s Democratic National Convention is on sale on Gilt Groupe today for $498 and, surprisingly, wasn’t the first item by the designer to sell out (it was still available at 12:45). Were customers afraid to buy it for fear that when they wear it everyone will recognize it as Michelle Obama’s dress? [Gilt Groupe] Keep reading »

Fashion World Officially Commends Michelle Obama

Michelle Obama hasn’t even been First Lady for a full two months, and she’s already getting recognized for making an impact on American fashion. The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) announced that Obama will be presented with the Board of Directors’ Special Tribute when the year’s fashion awards are given in June. Along with this acknowledgement, the nominees for the Swarovski Award for Womenswear, given to an emerging American designer two Obama favorites: Thakoon Panichgul and Jason Wu. So, if a young designer wants commendation (and a sweet cash prize to help their business), clearly they should keep the First Lady in mind. And if Obama attends the CFDA gala, what will she wear — maybe a Thakoon-Wu mashup? Keep reading »

Crave: Thakoon For Target Shibori Woven Dress

We’re not completely sure why Target decided to put out a “resort” line of summery clothes in the middle of winter. Did they do it to torment those of us currently dealing with snow and ice, or something? Luckily, there’s at least one piece in the Thakoon collection that you can wear right now, whether you live in Milwaukee (put on thick, brightly colored tights) or Florida (bare legs and sandals). We bet Thakoon-lover Michelle Obama is picking one up, too. [$39.99, Target.com] Keep reading »

Poll: Will You Brave The After-Christmas Crowds For Thakoon’s Target Collection?

Designer Thakoon Panchgul’s GO International Collection for Target hits stores Dec. 28, mere days after Christmas. The clothes are cute, if a bit summery, but are you going to be all shopped out and in no mood to fight angry women for a strappy dress in the middle of winter? Keep reading »

Thakoon Goes From Prospective First Lady To Target

Before Michelle Obama appeared in a Thakoon dress at the Democratic National Convention, the designer had no idea she would be wearing one of his creations. “I saw her on TV and I couldn’t even look, I was so embarrassed from being excited,” Thakoon Panichgul said. And now we’re embarrassed for being so excited because Thakoon has been named the next GO International for Target designer! Come December, all of your holiday party dress needs will be answered — if only finding presents for everyone in your family were as easy. [WWD] Keep reading »
