Text Messages Are Useless … Hormonally Speaking

Text messaging may have changed the way we communicate, but it will never change the way we communicate. According to a new study, text messages do not have the power to change a person’s hormone levels the way human voices do. Researchers found that girls who received phone calls or in-person visits from their mothers while doing stressful tasks were hormonally altered while those who received a text message were not. The girls who heard their mother’s voices showed a drop in cortisol (the stress hormone) levels and an increase oxytocin levels (the love hormone).*** Keep reading »

18 Reasons Not To Text Him Back

I got my first text from this guy I’ve liked forever. Finally, after years of subtly dangling the carrot that is moi, he started running for the bait. But what was I supposed to text back? I decided to call in reinforcements. I phoned my friend in a healthy, awesome, long-term relationship and I asked her how I should respond to his mobile message. To my surprise, she was like, “No way, do not text him back. You totally have the upper hand. And if he wants to actually talk to you, he’ll step up his game.” In the interest of trying something totally new, I listened to her and didn’t hit him back … even though I was just home, chillin’ with my friend, Bottle O’ White Wine. Anyway, the dude blew up my phone, my email, and my dang Facebook page. It was a rainstorm of communication over the next couple of days. So, to all the single ladies, I learned something from my experience. There are a whole lot of reasons not to be so quick to respond all the time. Keep reading »

Texting Rules: He Said What?

Being young in the 21st century means that the “dating world” extends beyond face-to-face communication. I’m talking about Facebook, email and, of course, texting. Texting has become the main form of communicating between almost everyone these days. We are all addicted to it. Whether we’re BBMing our best friends from the elliptical machine or texting under the table at dinner, it’s become a national habit. I text my friends to make plans, send mass messages about important events, and even text my mom on a regular basis. My girlfriends and I have had countless debates and discussions about texting rules when it comes to relationships, though. Keep reading »

Teen Text Walks, Falls Into A Manhole

A 15-year-old New York girl found out that walking and texting can be just as dangerous as driving while texting. Alexa Longueira was strolling down the street and paying more attention to sending a message than the sidewalk, when she plunged feet first into an uncovered manhole. “It was four or five feet, it was very painful. I kind of crawled out and the DEP guys came running and helped me,” Longueira told her local newspaper. “They were just, like, ‘I’m sorry! I’m sorry!’” Besides suffering through the serious sewage stench, Longueira also got scrapes on her arms and back. After making sure the teen was okay, her family plans to get back at city workers who left the manhole uncovered the old fashioned way: a lawsuit. Ever had your own text walking accident? [I fall about once a week as a result of walking and texting, which is made even more dangerous with the triple threat of walking, texting, and high heels. -- Editor] [MSNBC] Keep reading »

Blind Dates And Texting Don’t Mix — Or Do They?

Over at Double X, there’s this truly hilarious essay by Kelly Seal, who explains how she found herself apologizing to someone she was supposed to go on a date with, before they ever met, via text messaging. How and why? Seal and “Doug1968” met online dating and exchanged a few emails before setting up an in-person date. As has become incredibly typical of modern dating rituals, they opted to firm up their plans via text message. That’s when things got tricky. Keep reading »
