Yoko Ono’s breasts, a model’s ass, and a vagina are front in center at an art show in Paris. It would be just another day in the art world if the person behind it wasn’t one of hip hop’s greatest assets. Which begs the question: Does Pharrell Williams have a woman problem?
The Oscar-nominated musician was recently tapped to curate a modern art show at Galerie Perrotin in Le Marais section of the City of Lights. I was rather excited to check it out on the recommendation of a friend. The show is called “G I R L,” taking its name from Pharrell’s recent album. The themes, according to press coverage in the art world, are a celebration of femininity and of women.
The exhibit featured 37 artists — 18 of them women, including Tracey Emin, Cindy Sherman, Sophie Calle. Marina Abramovic, and pieces by the Guerrilla Girls critical of women’s exclusion from the upper echelons of the art world. Yet upon entering the gallery featuring more than three dozen pieces of art curated by Williams, I felt safely uncomfortable, if that makes sense. Keep reading »
According to a source speaking to Page Six, the video for Lady Gaga’s collab with R. Kelly, “Do What You Want” — which was scrapped following renewed attention on Kelly’s history as a, you know, pedophile — was far worse than we could have imagined. Although maybe we shouldn’t surprised? Shot by pervotographer Terry Richardson, who has his own reputation for sexually coercing and assaulting models, the video (that’s the promo photo above) allegedly featured Kelly as a doctor and Gaga as his patient. “Will I ever walk again?” Gaga supposedly asks Dr. Kelly.
“Yes, if you let me do whatever I want with your body,” he replies, followed by: “I’m putting you under, and when you wake up, you’re going to be pregnant.” THE HELLLLLL. Keep reading »
New York* magazine’s feature on Terry Richardson is here and it paints an even more disturbing picture of the creepy photographer.
I knew about the numerous sexual abuse accusations against him, but nothing about the extent to which Richardson is a seriously disturbed person. New York recounts how Richardson used to hear voices in his head; he has attempted to commit suicide numerous times, starting when he was 14. He’s a former heroin addict who has relapsed throughout his life. He’s been violent since childhood, once getting arrested after throwing his own mother across the room. None of these are reasons to discount any talent people might see in his work, of course. (Personally, I think his work is overrated.) But they all seem like good reasons to me for Richardson not to have quite as much power and influence as he does, and particularly not to spend much time around barely-legal young women. The amazing Neil Patrick Harris, who currently stars in “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” on Broadway, isn’t leaving much to the imagination on the cover of the new issue of Rolling Stone, is he? Unfortunately, the actor was photographed by predatory perv Terry Richardson, which kinda kills my enthusiasm for this shot. Really, RS? Couldn’t you have hired someone else to hang a top hat on Doogie’s dick? [Rolling Stone]
Pervtographer Terry Richardson is (allegedly) at it again! Yesterday, model Emma Appleton (right) posted the above screenshot (left) of a Facebook message she received from Richardson, outright offering her a spot in a Vogue shoot if she agreed to fuck him. Hmm, I wonder if Anna Wintour approved of this? Appleton posted the screenshot initially to Instagram, but when Gawker and other media outlets picked up on the story, she deleted the photo and her Twitter. Richardson’s rep, who sure is being kept busy these last few months, told Buzzfeed, “This is obviously a fake. Terry did not send this text.”
Well, it’s not a text, it’s a Facebook message received via the messenger app. But also, how is it “obviously” a fake? Is there some “obvious” Photoshop giveaway that I’m missing? Is, say, Terry Richardson’s real Facebook account under a different name and therefore this isn’t him? I mean, how is it OBVIOUSLY fake? I’m just wondering. Keep reading »
Last week, a former model named Charlotte Waters revealed on Reddit that she was allegedly sexually coerced and manipulated by Richardson at a photoshoot when she was 19. Now 24, Waters described in detail both on Reddit and in a subsequent interview with Vocativ how Richardson coerced her into performing sexually explicit acts with him as he and a female assistant took photos and cheered her on. Reading Waters stomach-turning story, I was disgusted but nonetheless not at all surprised by Richardson’s behavior; after all, we’ve heard about it before from other models, like Jamie Peck and Rie Rasmussen, who’ve experienced it firsthand as well. But I was immediately curious about this female assistant Waters described as being just as participatory in her degradation as Richardson himself, even taking photographs while Richardson ejaculated on her face. Well, Vocativ did some digging. The “probably 40 or 45ish … with dark hair and a little bit of work done on her face” woman that assisted Richardson during not only Waters’ shoot, but Peck’s as well, has been positively identified by both as Leslie Lessin, a stylist that Richardson has worked with professionally for years, including a recent cover shoot for Harper’s Bazaar featuring Miley Cyrus. Fashion photographer Terry Richardson has released a statement (posted to at least Page Six and Huffington Post, so far) defending himself against the mounting complaints from young models who have accused the “porno-chic” photog of sexual abuse.
Earlier this week, a former model revealed on Reddit that she was allegedly sexually assaulted by Richardson at a photoshoot when she was 19. She later identified herself as 24-year-old Charlotte Waters and she is just one of many young models to speak out about his eerily-similar inappropriate behavior with young women. In 2010, Danish model Rie Rasmussen publicly confronted Richardson about allegedly abusing young models and Jezebel has gathered numerous stories of abuse from models and stylists here. (Styleite has a comprehensive timeline of Terry’s creepy behavior here.)
Richardson lashed out against the “witch hunt,” calling the “false allegations” nothing more than “Internet gossip.” Keep reading »
