Following Arrest, Tennessee To Send Drug Addicted New Mom To Rehab

todays lady news
  • Prosecutors in Tennessee made a deal with the first woman to be arrested under a new law that jails mothers whose offspring test positive for drugs. Mallory Loyola, 26, will first undergo rehab treatment for meth as soon as room opens in a treatment center; prosecutors will assess her recovery and then decide whether to pursue an assault case. Woman Has Baby, Gets Arrested By Tennessee Police For Using Meth While Pregnant

todays lady news
  • Tennessee has arrested its first new mother under a new law that charges women for assault for using narcotics while pregnant. A 26-year-old mom was arrested after she tested positive for meth, which she admitted to using before her baby’s birth. Call me crazy, but maybe quality drug rehabilitation treatment might work better than throwing addicts in jail?!  A law like this automatically targets anyone who isn’t financially privileged enough to afford rehab in the first place. (Also, sneaky way to give rights to fetuses, everyone!)  [Think Progress]

Tennessee May Soon Criminalize Drug-Addicted Pregnant Moms

todays lady news
  • Tennessee’s state legislature has approved a bill that would make it possible to charge pregnant women for assault if they use narcotics during their pregnancy. Critics of the bill rightfully point out that it’s a sneaky way to give more rights to fetuses, thus easing the way to criminalizing abortion. Women’s rights groups and the ACLU are asking Governor Bill Haslam to veto the bill. [TennesseanCosmopolitan]

GOP Congressman Says VAWA Has A “Motherhood-And-Apple-Pie Title” — What?

Today's Lady News photo
  • Congressman John Duncan from Tennessee says he is undecided on which way he’ll vote on the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which passed the Senate last week 78-22.  His reasoning?  ”Every bill is given a motherhood-and apple-pie title,” and if “you voted on the title, you’d vote for every bill up here.”  Funny thing is, the title holds true to the content of the bill and has since 1994.  Sadly, this is not the most ridiculous quote from the interview.  Despite being unsure of his vote he is against domestic violence because “most men can handle [violence] a little better than a lot of women can.”  Yeah, go ahead.  Read that last line again. Tennessee Reintroduces “Don’t Say Gay” Bill

Today's Lady News photo
  • Tennessee’s state Senate has reintroduced a bill that would ban elementary and middle school teachers from discussing homosexuality because it is not “natural” reproduction. The bill reads that anything other than natural reproduction is “sensitive,” “inappropriate,” and “best explained and discussed in the home.” Clearly if children are not exposed to gayness, they will never end up gay. That totally works. [Feminist.org]
