Yesterday I attended the first-ever taping of “What Not to Wear” in front of a live studio audience. I was invited to attend because, as you may remember, last year I was surprise-ambushed by my friends and family and coworkers and given a $5,000 makeover — complete with a wardrobe overhaul, make up assessment and new hairdo. As a past contributor — which is what “WNTW” calls its makeovers — I was invited to update viewers on my life since the show aired. But I also learned a ton – from “WNTW” experts Stacy London, Clinton Kelly, Carmindy and Ted Gibson– about what exactly goes into putting together a hour-long TV program in front of a studio audience. I won’t reveal exactly what went on during the one-of-a-kind episode — you’re going to have to tune in to find out! — but you should definitely click through for tips on makeup, clothes and how your TV sausage is made.

Every Monday night while watching “Gossip Girl,” I gush over Blake Lively‘s endless blond locks, which are certainly unattainable without the assistance of a few extensions. However, one achievable hairdo from the flaxen-haired actress is her braided ponytail from the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala. With summer’s impending humidity, we’ve been on the hunt for any cute way to lift hair off the shoulders and neck to keep cool despite the 90+ degrees, because the go-to ponytail will quickly become pretty boring. In an effort to diversify your hairstyle, attempt the braided pony like Blake. Celebrity hairstylist Ted Gibson provides a great how-to video so early morning hair struggles will become a thing of the past. [Stylelist] Keep reading »
“New Moon” star Ashley Greene visited “The Late Show with David Letterman” yesterday wearing an awesome pinstripe suit and debuting a new haircut. Before, Ashley’s enviable mane was way past her shoulders. Hairstylist Ted Gibson shortened it so it hangs right below her shoulders, then he used a flatiron to make it sleek and added Tame It Lotion from his haircare line to smooth flyaways. Ashley’s new style reminds me of Dakota Fanning’s chic midi-bob. I wish my hair would hurry up and grow! Keep reading »
There are some people in the cutthroat fashion and beauty industry that are just plain scary. In a few harsh circles, the meanest mean girls are adept at out-meaning one another. And then there’s Ted Gibson. The Texas-born, New York-based hairstylist doesn’t let the fact that Angelina Jolie and Renee Zellweger (to name a few) have him on speed dial go to his head. In fact, he’s one of the kindest people I know, goes out of his way to make people feel special, and is just so ridiculously talented to top it all off. I was lucky enough to run into him when he was doing the divine-looking hair at the Vena Cava show last week and, sadly, I glanced in the mirror near his hair station and quickly realized that my hair looked like I had been living out in the wilderness for awhile. (Which I have, sort of, but that’s a different story.) Embarrassing! Anyhoo, instead of admonishing me and making me feel like an even sadder sack, he slipped me a couple of packets of the following hair care miracles. Keep reading »
Every personality on “What Not to Wear” seems right for the makeover show, with the exception of hairstylist Nick Arrojo (pictured right). Hosts Clinton Kelly and Stacy London have the good fashion cop/bad fashion cop schtick perfected, and makeup artist Carmindy always makes the participant look a hundred times better by “playing up” their eyes or lips. But Nick’s hairstyles were usually hit or miss. He was always a little too scissor-happy, giving participants “mom hair” on more than one occasion. And his own hairstyles, including boyish ringlets and a Caesar cut with a flavor saver, seemed in need of a makeover, too. Keep reading »
Taking showers during the winter is no fun. The water takes forever to heat up, and after you’re finally all fresh and clean, you have to put on buckets of lotion in a freezing cold apartment. Well, hairstylist extraordinaire Ted Gibson has a line of body shampoos and conditioners that might make us a little more fond of showering, even when it’s cold. While body conditioner might seem silly, it means you can skip the après-shower lotion step. Genius! [$42, TedGibsonBeauty.com]
We’re giving away five Ted Gibson Body Kits , but you have to work if you want one. The five best commenters for this coming week — from today, Friday, Jan. 9 through Thursday, Jan. 15 — will be awarded with a set, which includes three body shampoos and three body conditioners.
