Hey! So you probably noticed The Frisky was down all day. We seem to be up and running — FOR NOW!!!! — so I can finally bring you this hilariously late recap of last night’s MTV VMAs. I know, you forgot it happened already.
Without the promise of Miley Cyrus’s flapjacks twerking against Robin Thicke’s sleazy groin, last night’s MTV Video Music Awards had a lot to live up to. So how did it go? Well, there was a lot less tongue, thank god, much better twerking (thanks Nicki!), the Kardashians at their worst, and so, so, so much Beyonce. Here are the moments not to be missed from last night’s MTV VMAs.
Nicki Minaj had a lightening fast costume change in between performing her single “Anaconda” and her collab with Ariana Grande and Jessie J, “Bang Bang,” to open the show — but apparently she wasn’t zipped into her second dress correctly because she had to clutch the front together to prevent a wardrobe malfunction. “As a teenager, I didn’t understand that saying you’re a feminist is just saying that you hope women and men will have equal rights and equal opportunities. What it seemed to me, the way it was phrased in culture, society, was that you hate men. And, now, I think a lot of girls have had a feminist awakening because they understand what the word means. For so long it’s been made to seem like something where you’d picket against the opposite sex, whereas it’s not about that at all. … Becoming friends with Lena — without her preaching to me, but just seeing why she believes what she believes, why she says what she says, why she stands for what she stands for — has made me realize that I’ve been taking a feminist stance without actually saying so.”
Hell yeah, Taylor Swift! It’s so lovely to see a young, female celeb, initially confused about what it means to be a feminist thanks to bullshit stereotypes, realize she’s been one all along. We always knew it, but we’re glad to see Taylor finally embrace the label. Welcome to the club, Tay! [The Guardian]
I haven’t owned a pair of Keds since about 5th grade, but this new Taylor Swift-inspired design might finally convince me to get some. I still haven’t decided how I feel about her new single, but I’m a fan of these Sneaky Cat Keds. They’ll be available in October, just like the her new “1989″ album, and feature — you guessed it — sneaky little cats peeking over the edge of the shoe. The heel has Taylor’s birthday, 12-13-89, scrawled on the back in metallic lettering. I’m not sure how I feel about walking around with someone else’s birthday on my feet, but I like that the shoes have just enough of a cutesy twist to stand out without being overwhelming, and I adore any and all cat-related footwear. Taylor already has a pretty massive Keds collection, which isn’t surprising since she seems to work them into just about everything she wears, but this pair was specially designed to celebrate her album launch. I’m still pondering whether to get some, but if you want your own Swifty kitty shoes, you can sign up for the pre-order list here.
From now on, I am going to seize any opportunity to steal a celeb’s spotlight by posing by ass off while the paparazzi try to get a decent shot. That’s what Kara Dudley did when she followed Taylor Swift out of a store in Manhattan’s Soho neighborhood, Taylor’s BFF Karlie Kloss right behind her. “I didn’t know what they were doing but I decided to strike a pose anyways because how cool is that!” she told the UK’s Daily Mirror. Hilarious! [Mirror]
Hey! How was your holiday weekend? Did you spend it with friends? So did Taylor Swift! See, there she is with Lena Dunham, Emma Stone, former “Gossip Girl” actress Jessica Szohr, Jaime King, indie pop singer Ingrid Michaelson, Canadian model Jessica Stam, and Australian model Amanda Griffith. You know, just some gal pals. Of course Lena’s gotta be the different one…
Taylor Swift has been stoking the fire of her ever-obsessive fan base by sending surprise replies to her fans on Instagram these past few months. I would venture that she’s tagged in a lot of pictures, so I’m not sure how she chooses which ones to respond to, but they range from posts of fans who mention listening to her music, to concert photos, to paparazzi shots of her. The photo above was in response to a fan’s photo of she and her husband at one of Swift’s concerts years ago, telling her how connected she felt at the show. Keep reading »
