When Tavi Met Marc

Well, lookie who I spotted while milling around backstage before Marc Jacobs‘ show — the designer himself, meeting silver-haired (um, yes) teen fashion blogger, Tavi, while getting his makeup done. It was the first time the two had met and Tavi was there to interview Marc for a video blog. When the makeup artist asked who Tavi was, Marc explained, describing her as “very stylish.” Tavi looked tickled. Keep reading »

Quotable: Tavi Defends Her Scandalous Hat

“I had no intentions of blocking the views of people behind me but it didn’t block any views-I’m SHORT, so watching the show behind me would be like watching it through a regular-sized adult, but better, because adult heads do not have holes in them. Other than the stinky cheese man, from that one book, from like, second grade, or something. My dad was sitting next to the Grazia writer that tweeted this picture and said there shouldn’t have been any problems in seeing the clothes, but I’m pretty sure she or he was joking, anyway?”

13-year-old fashion blogger Tavi responds to complaints regarding her “showy” hat blocking fashion editors’ views at the recent Dior couture show. Also, the bow was a gift from the atelier’s milliner, Stephen Jones, making it maybe the best swag of fashion week ever. How could she not wear it? [Style Rookie] Keep reading »

Tavi’s Hat Incites Anger From The Twitterati—Except For Uncle Karl

Tavi sat front row at the Dior couture show in Paris, sporting this rather tall hair-bow-hat-thing. Obviously peeved that some teenager had gotten better seats, and will probably take her job next, a Grazia editor Tweeted the pic with an annoyed caption: “Dior through Tavi’s pesky hat.” The outrage quickly spread through the Twittersphere. But the one person who didn’t seem to mind? Karl Lagerfeld (OK, the fake one): “Spotted my niece Tavi today around Paris wearing a delightful hat. Does she do children’s parties?” Welcome to the fashion world, people. [Twitter] Keep reading »

2009: The Year Of The Real Girls

If you came of age in the early 2000s, like I did, pop culture was strange—strangely plastic, that is. Britney Spears had the hottest body on earth, but she married a skeezebag and shaved her head. Paris Hilton had a sex tape, then a TV show and then everyone wanted to be her best friend. Hugh Hefner‘s bunny-girlfriends got their own show and then two of them spun off and started shows of their own.
All the way up to 2007, things were looking weird, when “Gossip Girl” debuted and Blake Lively‘s cleavage co-starred in every scene. Yes, indeed, the 2000s were the decade to be conventionally pretty, blonde, silicone, slick, PR-laden, lawyered up, and above all, fake.

Yes, 2009 sucked and we’re all glad that it’s over. But in 2009, pop culture had mercy on our souls. It couldn’t run on fumes anymore. People, one hopes, got bored. And so, against all odds, 2009 became the Year Of The Real Girl. Keep reading »

The Trouble With Tavi?

Is Tavi becoming a case of too-much, too-soon?

The latest news: The 13-year-old blogger has been “hired” by Harper’s Bazaar to write copy for its January issue, which would seem like the magazine is treating the teen fashion blogger as an ingénue. Other editors, however, are taking issue with this move. Huffington Post style editor Lesley Blume tells New York magazine’s The Cut, “I think she’s very dear, but I think it’s crazy,” while Anne Slowey of Elle calls her “gimmicky.”

So what’s going on here? Is Tavi being taken advantage of? Or is her entrée into a career just exposing the world of fashion journalism for what it is? Here are our thoughts and feelings … Keep reading »

Check Out Tavi’s Rodarte For Target Video

Style blogging wunderkind Tavi just released a fairly adorable and kind of intense video she made to “introduce you to Rodarte.” The video looks at the brand as a whole, the upcoming Target line (including a yellow knit sweater she loves), and even has a little Jason Schwartzman action going on. All in all, it’s kind of making our 13-year-old selves retroactively feel like slackers. [Style.com] Keep reading »

Tavi Wears What On Her Head At Fashion Week?

The rise of teen fashion blogger Tavi continues! And recently, her progress in super-smart-style-awesomeness has multiplied exponentially thanks to her cover on Pop magazine, and now her blogger participation at Fashion Week.

Think all the glitz and fame is going to her head? Teen Vogue caught up with Tavi for a quick interview, and it warmed our hearts to see how humble and independent she remains. Especially when it comes to her outfit—a Miu Miu top (sent by a reader … jealous) with “something that was my mom’s” over it, and then a DIY headpiece made out of guitar straps. Wearing crap on your head, people. It’s in. [TeenVogue.com] Keep reading »

Where Do Designers Get Their Inspiration? Kids!

According to Loic Prigent, director of the fashion documentary “The Day Before,” there’s one question designers never want to answer: “”What is your inspiration?’ is the number one enemy in fashion journalism now. They really hate it when you ask it,” Prigent admits. [Wall Street Journal]

Yet, while Marc Jacobs might be dodgy about his collection’s meaning, other designers are just fine accrediting their fuel for creativity—teen fashion bloggers. The group has gained momentum in the past year to become the new power youth, with 13-year-old Tavi as one at the forefront (pictured above, and, BTW, she looks like she also enjoys putting cute crap on her head). After the Rodarte designers saw Tavi’s blog, they started corresponding with the teenager, and Tavi has become the label’s muse. Says co-designer Kate Mulleavy, “Tavi makes you think about things differently, makes you see things differently.” Also cited as sources of inspiration were Bryan Boy and Jane from Sea of Shoes.

Well, you know what they say—the children are our future. And in this case, they’re telling us what we’ll be wearing tomorrow. [Wall Street Journal] Keep reading »

Tween Fashion Blogger Tavi Lands POP Magazine Cover

Our favorite tween fashion blogger Tavi may not have scored the cover of Love, but it looks like she has landed on the latest issue of POP magazine, whose first relaunch issue under new editor Dasha Zhukova is due out soon. The black and white cover shows the Style Rookie blogger wearing some rad sequined shorts in front of a Damien Hirst background. We can’t say for sure whether this cover is official—it was posted on Grazia’s blog this morning (a pretty credible source), but the link has disappeared. The pic, however, is starting to make the rounds, so we’re assuming it’s a leak. Either way, we’re happy to see the smart and wacky Tavi gaining recognition. [Fashion Copious] Keep reading »

Who Should Be On The Next Cover Of Love Magazine?

Newcomer Love magazine made a splash with its debut issue featuring a naked Beth Ditto on the cover. So, we’ve been eagerly anticipating the U.K.-style journal’s second issue, the theme of which is “New Blood: The Young & The Reckless.” The mag is already doing some clever pre-marketing by leaking possible covers. Some possibilities include Tavi (on the left), the 13-year-old fashion blogger who made our list as one of the “teens we’re most jealous of.” Alex (on the right) is an 18-year-old guitar teacher and bass player. (Uh, has anyone heard of this kid before?) Keep reading »
