“I don’t understand why it’s so horrible to create an image of yourself, because that’s what pop music is. Even the celebrities who seem to be really real and down to earth still separate themselves from their image, so I don’t get it. I feel like people think she’s threatening because she’s all these things that women aren’t allowed to be, so people are trying to find the quality that isn’t genuine, and want to take away credit that she, you know, made herself.”

– An incredibly wise beyond her years Tavi Gevinson defends Lana Del Rey in an off-the-cuff interview with NYMag.com. Of Lana’s much criticized performance on “Saturday Night Live,” Tavi admitted it “wasn’t good,” but it also was “proof to people who think she has a whole team behind her that she wasn’t that trained.” Whatever you think of Del Rey’s music, Tavi is exactly right — first, Lana was trashed for having a too-perfectly crafted image, then she was trashed for not living up to that image in her first major television appearance. Which is it? [NYMag.com]

It’s not easy being a 15-year-old wunderkind. Aside from the basic responsibilities of going to high school, blogger Tavi Gevinson also runs her own magazine — Rookie Mag — and covers Fashion Week. After the jump, we catch up with her as she prepares to head from her home in Chicago to New York for the festivities. One thing I love about this video: we get to hear Tavi’s sweet Midwestern-tinged accent, which makes her seem more like a normal kid and less like a teenage prodigy. [NYMag] Keep reading »

Tavi Lends Her Voice To A New Animated Short Film

It’s hard not to love Tavi. I’m generally opposed to any and all things “twee,” but Tavi has enough brains and sass to transcend the genre. When I first heard about this “13-year-old fashion blogger” a couple years ago, I envisioned a delusional, entitled teen brandishing her mother’s Birkin bag, shooting photos of herself on a $1,000+ digital camera she got for her birthday (thank god that kind of thing is mostly relegated to my hometown). In other words, a childlike slip of a girl with wide, unsettling eyes and an old soul was not the image that sprung to mind — but that’s Tavi! At first, I was a skeptic; now, I’m a fan … and pretty much everyone else is, too. Keep reading »

“I went to fashion week for the first time when I was 13. People were confused about my being there for a few reasons; one was that I was a blogger. The word itself, ‘blog,’ it’s kind of an ugly word. It just doesn’t sound very legitimate. And fashion as an industry has been really behind about being online, so I think people were confused and angry that someone younger than them had figured it out. They would talk about how inappropriate it was for someone my age to be at fashion week. But this is coming from an industry that fetishizes youth!”

Tavi Gevinson, the teen fashion blogger behind The Style Rookie and Rookie Mag, spoke to the BBC yesterday about the snotty ‘tude she got from fashion industry insiders. True, a lot of them have a snotty ‘tude to begin with. However, the dismissivness against Tavi (who is now 15) was about deep fears that some adults have about being replaced by younger, fresher voices. Hello, jealousy. It also doesn’t help that she’s female. If Tavi was a boy, I think she’d automatically be given more respect.  Whether you think she’s a little weird, or you think she’s brilliant, you have to agree that Tavi is extremely bright, creative and ambitious. I’d much rather have her be a mouthpiece for young women than whoever the Disney Channel is pushing on kids these days. A lot of the Tavi trashing is just sexism and ageism and since she appears to be keen on not being “a flash in the pan,” I admire her strength with dealing with it. [NYmag.com]

Look, It’s Tavi In The New Wilco Music Video

Owing to a random train of events, Spencer Tweedy, the son of Wilco’s lead singer, made a music video with Rookie‘s Tavi Gevinson for the title track of his dad’s new album, The Whole Love. The video, which also stars Spencer’s younger brother Sammy, shows the kids sliding around on wood floors in their socks, playing on a playground, and building pillow forts. You know, the kind of stuff kids do when they’re not shooting magazine covers and making music videos. Read more and see the video…

My Embarrassing Run-In With Tavi Gevinson

Before working at The Frisky, I spent a few years writing for both music magazines and gossip mags. And it was funny, because the people you’d think I’d get nervous to talk to, I didn’t necessarily, while others left me sweaty palmed and dry mouthed. Michel Gondry? We joked around and took a bunch of stupid snapshots. Me and Andrew WK had a life-changingly good chat. And I once took comedians Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter and David Wain to a frat party and it was totally fun. But when I had the chance to meet Blake Schwarzenbach from the band Jawbreaker, I ran away from him because i was afraid I was going to say something really stupid.

This is all to say that fandom and idol worship is completely relative and weird and individualistic. And so it was when I spotted tiny, adorable, and completely incredible Tavi Gevinson out front of the Ace Hotel the other day. I love her. I admire her. And I totally fanned out on her. How To Make It Through High School (Or Almost Anything)

You’re allowed to care about stuff. That’s the first thing. Even if you think it’s stupid or weird, like polka music or “being obsessed with mimes.” One day you will look back not at all the things that made you cool enough to fit in, but the things that didn’t. And you will love them.

It seems the love affair between teen wunderkind style blogger Tavi Gevinson and Sassy magazine creator Jane Pratt may be coming to a close. Tavi originally signed on to be a part of Pratt’s new website xoJane, and was meant to bring the teen voice and angle to the publication. But when Pratt’s site launched earlier this year, the Style Rookie blogger’s influence was nowhere to be found. Now it seems that Gevinson has decided that xoJane’s parent corporation, Say Media, isn’t anyone she wants to work with. Instead, Gevinson is going independent for her new magazine venture, Rookie. “It was just that I want to have full control, and it’s important to me that we’re independent, not so that we can be indie and ‘down with the Man,’ but because I find a lot of comfort knowing that it’s all in my control,” said Gevinson in a statement. Given Gevinson’s love of all things ’90s (Riot Grrl, Courtney Love, “My So-Called Life”), we’re not surprised she’s decided to invoke a DIY spirit. And frankly, we’re more excited than ever to see what she’s going to produce. [The Observer] Keep reading »

Tavi Gevinson Is Going To Write A Book About Being Tavi Gevinson, Sort Of

Fashion’s favorite teenage blogger Tavi Gevinson has a new book project in the works. After spending the night at a sleepover with Marisa Meltzer, the co-author of How Sassy Changed My Life (full disclosure: I’m interviewed in that book, are you jealz?), Gevinson and Meltzer cooked up a project tentatively titled Diary that’s one part DIY scrapbook of Gevinson’s blog Style Rookie, and one part art collage, featuring work from Miranda July and Rodarte designers Laura and Kate Mulleavy. There will also be reminders that Tavi is, yes, still a teen–like pages to design your “dream pizza” (whhhhhhat?) and how to make a friendship bracelet. Cool or too cutesy? [WWD] Keep reading »

Show Us Your Most Stylish Teen Self!

The other day we saw a list of the 10 most stylish kids under 20. A lot of the usual suspects were on the list: actress Chloe Moretz, singer Willow Smith, and blogger Tavi Gevinson. These girls all have great style–but it helps that they have stylists, unending budgets and access to top designers to make it happen. We didn’t have that when we were teens, but still, we had pretty wild style when we were younger. Now it’s your turn to share. We want your teenage photos! Were you channeling Angela Chase? Were you a preppy gossip girl? A mallternative punk? We want to see it!

Send us a picture — with a description of what you’re wearing — that best encapsulates your teenage style, and we’ll include them in a giant Frisky reader fashion slideshow. Send your stylish teen images to me at Julie@TheFrisky.com. Keep reading »
