The Sordid Tale Of An Unaccounted For Tampon (In GIFs!)

Womanhood is a glorious, many-petaled flower. (Or something.) But there are some times when being a lady really sucks. Like, say, when you know you put a tampon in the night before and  you know you didn’t take it out and now you can’t find it. It’s really missing. Seriously, where did that little bugger go?! Join me on every step of this special journey, after the jump… Keep reading »

This Is What Tampon Commercials Look Like In Russia

This Is What Tampon Commercials Look Like In Russia
Sharks are circling!

In Russia, you don’t have period, period has YOU! In all seriousness, this Russian Tampax commercial (very graphic, by the way, so if you’re squeamish, skip), shows the imagined terror of mixing periods and open water swimming. Any truth to the notion that periods attract sharks? According to Vancouver Aquarium spokesperson Ann Dreoloni, “Honestly, I think the jury is still out on this question. According to what I have read so far, there are people who believe the chance of a shark attack is greater while menstruating … and others who think this has absolutely no impact on shark attacks at all.”  And shark behavior expert Ralph S. Collier says, adorably uncomfortably, “If it’s a young lady for whom it’s that time of the month, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Better to wait till everything is back to normal to go into the ocean.” Ha! Normal. How antiquated. In any case, two shark experts is enough to convince me — I’m staying on the shore when sharks are in the water. [LiveLeak]

"You're Gross & Weird & No One Understands You"

“Tampon Vs. Moon Cup Rap Battle” just might be the most clever advertising I’ve ever seen about periods (not that that’s saying much, as the bar is set rather low). Props to the Moon Cup people for realizing that some people just think they’re a bunch of gross, weird, period blood-collecting hippies. They kinda are, but Moon Cups are way better for environment and vaginal dryness! I think I learned more about how my vagina works from this video than in years of health class. [YouTube]

Weird Crime Of The Day: Flaming Tampon Attack On Car

“Flaming Tampon” might sound like the next indie rock sensation, but not in this case.

Pennsylvania State Police say Patricia Deshong, 25, and Quentin Deshong, 22, who were arrested Jan. 7 in in Metal Township, Penn., after allegedly attempting to blow up a vehicle outside of a bar using flaming feminine hygiene products, according to documents obtained by The Smoking Gun.

The incident took place outside the Hillside Tavern at around 2:50 a.m., after officers got a report that a man and woman were allegedly vandalizing a green 2006 Ford Fusion car in the bar parking lot, the website reports. Read more…

When pop culture depicts transgender people, they usually do it in such a facepalm way that I wonder why anyone bothers anymore. The latest what-were-you-thinking? comes courtesy of Libra tampons in New Zealand, which aired a commercial that implies trans folks who dress as women are not “real women.” The commercial shows an ostensibly “real” woman standing next to a trans person in the bathroom, who I guess is a drag queen. They both put on their lip gloss and mascara and adjust their boobs in their tight party dress. Then the “real” woman pulls a tampon out of her purse. The drag queen makes a “hmmph!” face and walks away. Keep reading »

You Can’t Say That On Television: Networks Nix The V-Word In Tampon Ads

Earlier this week Kotex released sassy new commercials advertising its pads and tampons — but advertising agency JWT butted heads with three broadcast TV stations that wouldn’t let them say a very naughty, shameful word.

Yes, even though your grandma has seen “The Vagina Monologues,” when it comes to your secret special lady place, TV prefers feminine hygiene commercials use a cutesy euphemism like “down there” instead of saying “vagina.” (And two networks weren’t keen to air an ad referring to a lady’s “down there,” either.) What Was Your First Period Like?

If Tyra Banks can share with everyone on “The Tyra Show” when she got her first period—during 11th grade, at her dad’s house—so can The Frisky editors. I’ll start!

Mine came the summer after 7th grade on the second morning of sailing lessons at the local country club. (Shut up, I’m a WASP.) One the first day of obnoxiously preppy sailing class, the students had to tread water in the pool for a few minutes to prove that we wouldn’t drown if the boats capsized. But my Blair Waldorf-ian self woke up the morning of the second class with blood in my underwear! Because I’m my mom’s baby, she majorly teared-up over me getting my period—so embarrassing! So I just snatched the pads from her and hissed that I didn’t want to talk about it. Mom had no chance to teach me about tampons and I didn’t ask!

But I spent the next several days of sailing class terrified we’d have to go in the pool again, or my boat would capsize and I’d get wet, and everybody would know I was wearing a big, soggy pad. To this day, that’s pretty much all I remember about sailing lessons! I didn’t use a tampon for the first time until I was 16 (during a performance of “The Vagina Monologues” of all places). Alas, by then, my sailing days were over.

I’m not the only Frisk-ette with a slightly tragic first period story. Our tales of tampons and trauma, after the jump. Keep reading »

Furnish Your Pad With Pads

As a lady, you know that every month there will be blood. But designer Andy Kurovets wants Aunt Flo to move in with you permanently. Soak in his Hygienic Sanitary Pad Layers Table. If only we could really shelve our periods … but these will at least help you organize your bloody mess. Perhaps there is no more fitting furniture to store your chick-rock CD collection. Those Sarah McLachlan, Indigo Girls, Ani DiFranco, and Joni Mitchell records would look quite at home lined up on these sanitary napkins. Now, you gotta see what Andy did with with a tampon, after the jump! [WOW Report via Yanko Design] Keep reading »

My Period Is Not A Natural Disaster, Thank You Very Much

Yesterday, as I was flipping through People, I came across an advertisement that scared me to death. What was it marketing? Feminine hygiene products, of course. Because, I mean, what could be scarier than a period?! The Always Infinity ad features a dangerous tornado-like whirlpool swirling ominously into a gigantic maxi pad. A pad that, apparently, has the power to absorb ten times its weight— “so your heavy days won’t spin you out of control.” (If you care to see the full, 3-D, moving visual, check it out here.)
