Investigators say DNA found on a fragment of one of the Boston bombs is not a match with samples taken from the widow of Tamerlan Tsarnaev, reports NBC News. But that doesn’t mean 24-year-old Katherine Russell is in the clear. In fact, authorities are “sharpening” their investigation of her, reports the Washington Post. Among the reasons: They found extremist material on her laptop, including al-Qaeda’s Inspire magazine. What they don’t know is whether she called up the material herself or whether her husband borrowed her computer to do so. Read more on Newser…
While suspected Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev awaits questioning in a Cambridge hospital, the focus is turning to the wife of Tamerlan Tsarnaev. It’s hard to believe, but Tamerlan was a husband and a father. His wife, 24-year-old Katherine Russell Tsarnaev, grew up as an average, all-American girl in Rhode Island.
How did she get involved with Tamerlan, and how much did she know? Investigators are trying to find out. Here’s what we know about her so far.
- Katherine is the oldest of three daughters. Her father is an emergency room physician, and her mother is a nurse. She grew up in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, where her parents still live. Read more on The Stir…
Ruslan Tsarni, the uncle of Boston Marathon bombing suspects Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, gained nationwide attention for his heartbreakingly gruff and shout-y declaration to reporters that the brothers were “losers” who brought shame upon his family and the Chechen people. And now, Uncle Ruslan, as he’s affectionately known on the interwebs, is a meme. Well played. Check out a few more after the jump… [Quick Meme] Keep reading »
Guys, meet Ruslan Tsarni, uncle to brothers Tamerlan Tsarnaev and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who are suspected of committing the Boston Marathon bombing on Monday. Tsarni spoke to the media about his nephews, who he hadn’t seen since 2005. As police continue to search for Dzhokhar (Tamerian was killed in the shootout with police early this morning)), Uncle Ruslan (as he’s affectionately being called on Twitter) is firm that his family is appalled, ashamed and devastated by their alleged acts. His interview is heartbreaking. Kudos to him for handling many of the dumb questions posed by the vulture-like reporters so well. Watch it above.
Soooo, while you were sleeping, the search for the person or persons who committed Monday’s bombing at the Boston Marathon went into overdrive. A brief recap: yesterday, police released surveillance footage and photos of two suspects. Last night, those two suspects — now identified as brothers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev – robbed a 7-11 near MIT, shot and killed an MIT police officer, and committed an armed carjacking (the driver was released unharmed). Police pursued the car, a gunfight ensued, and the suspects allegedly threw explosives into the street. Elder brother Tamerlan was killed and Dzhokhar apparently ran over his brother in order to get away. An IED was strapped to Tamerlan’s chest. Police are now on a city-wide manhunt for the remaining suspect, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, and the entire city of Boston has been advised to stay inside with their doors locked. Utter insanity. Stay safe everyone and I’ll update this post as more information comes in. [NBC News]
