Sex On TV: “Swingtown” Makes Us Yearn For The Sexy Summer Of ’76

All this talk about polyamory has convinced me it’s time to confess a rather intimate secret: I’m a fan of Swingtown on CBS. I know I can’t be the only fan out there — the message boards prove that (Yes, I’m actually reading the message boards. Look, my boyfriend’s been away on business. I’m lonely.), but it’s been difficult to find anyone in real life who admits to watching the show.

    Polyamory Gets A Guidebook

Shortbus, Swingtown, Kinsey, the media does a great job of making polyamory seem sexy. After all, who doesn’t want to get the most bang for their buck? Open relationships sound good in theory, are they really in practice? While most of us seem to have a hard enough time wrangling one man, could we juggle two or three or four? After a couple of seasons of polygamy portrayed in Big Love, we’ve all got curiosities, questions and secret desires. And thankfully Jenny Block has got public answers. A bisexual author, suburban wife and mother, Block has just written what is considered by the polyamorous community to be a ground-breaking autobiographical book Open: Love, Sex, and Life In An Open Marriage. Ms. Block loves her husband and their daughter, but she longed for more sex and wanted some of it to be with women. So, she and her husband decided to boldly go polyamorous and then talk about their experiences. Man, that sounds so healthy and slutty, a rare-ish combination. What’s their secret?! Guess there’s only one way to find out — make Open your required summer reading. [Huffington Post]

    Show We’ll Be Watching: Swingtown

One of the upcoming shows getting lots of buzz is Swingtown on CBS — I don’t think it has an official release date yet, but I’m psyched. The show centers around couples in the 1970′s who are into swinging — i.e. partner swapping. How did a show like this end up on CBS? It is produced by the same director behind HBO juggernauts Big Love and Rome and you would think that a show so much about, you know, sex, would be better suited for a network that allows nudity. But producer Mike Kelley says, “I actually think the shackles of having to show more explicit things every week to week to week on cable would have been far more constricting.” Uh, yeah. Whatever, we’ll be watching…and wishing for some nipple, I’m sure. [NY Times via Boinkology] Keep reading »
