I still can’t get my mind off the brutal winter to come. We’ve had a few bone-chilling days already, and it’s only mid-November. Needless to say, it’s hard to stay warm and sexy in the wintertime. Bulking up is a must so as not to freeze, but who wants to leave the house looking like a swaddled snowman just because it’s cold outside? Not me. The penguins living on the shores of New Zealand’s north island have been suffering of late, thanks to a disastrous oil spill that occurred there earlier this month. But! Now there’s something we can do to help the little guys — knit ‘em some sweaters. It seems that penguin sweaters are needed to help keep the birds warm and prevent them from ingesting too much oil as a result of preening their feathers. Also, they are super cute.

This isn’t the first time penguin sweaters have been employed. Rescuers have actually been using surplus sweaters from a 2001 penguin sweater initiative. The Purr-fect Transitional Sweater

With the winter months headed our way, I’m seriously hoarding any sweater I can get my hands on. I’m really into something that I can wear now on its own and continue to wear as a layer once the colder weather rolls in. This Dolly Cat Jumper from ASOS is crucial to my fall/winter transitional wardrobe. The graphic is cute without being cheesy, and the use of negative space to form the silhouettes is actually quite artistic. I’m a chiaroscuro kind of girl, so naturally I would choose the sweater in black, but for anyone who (unlike me) isn’t afraid to integrate some brighter colors into their outfits, it looks brilliant in shocking red.

Let’s face it, when we think of sweaters, cardigans automatically come to mind — this is the era of extreme layering after all. But having lived in an open-stitch pullover sweater all summer, I’ve realized how one can transform a wardrobe. Not only are they easy to take on and off, but they also go with practically everything, including cropped pants and pencil skirts a la Joan Holloway of “Mad Men.” Since pullover sweaters simplify a look, choose one that has a bit of embellishment, pattern, intricate stitching, or color to kick up the panache-factor without the heavy use of accessories. Necessity, and extreme fandom, are the mothers of invention, right? That’s exactly what prompted German mom Joanne Conklin to knit these totally out of control New Kids on the Block and Vanilla Ice sweaters for her teenage daughter. Before she knew it, she’d launched a full on NKOTB knitwear empire. “We were living in Germany at the time and bands like New Kids On The Block were huge with the teen set,” says Joanne. “However, there were no fan T-shirts to be found anywhere, so I decided to knit sweaters. I made one for my daughter, then her friends, and word-of-mouth spread and the next thing you know I’d knit over a hundred of them, selling all but about six of them.” And you can understand why.
