“I think of myself as a humanist because I think it’s less alienating to people who think of feminism as being a load of strident bitches and because you want everyone to have equal pay, equal rights, education and healthcare. It’s a bit of an old-fashioned word. It’s used more in a way to minimize you. My daughter [Eva Amurri] who is 28, doesn’t even relate to the word “feminist” and she is definitely in control of her decisions and her body.”

– Susan Sarandon is probably the last celebrity I would have expected to use the “I’m a humanist, not a feminist” line. I wish someone with her clout and stature would take back the term from the negative connotations and not let it be used to “minimize” a person, as she put it. Anyway, I would argue Sarandon is a feminist, though, because later in the interview, she talks about her sons and how she’s proud both of them know how to cook. “The things I told them to do if they wanted a good woman were to learn to listen and to learn to cook breakfast, lunch and dinner,” she explained. “They can do that.” It seems to me like Susan Sarandon really believes one’s gender shouldn’t dictate their roles. To me, that’s feminism!  [Guardian UK] [Photo: WENN]

“I was told by John Cassavetes when I did ‘Tempest’ never to be a mom because I would not be sensual anymore. I think I laughed. I’m happy to be considered desirable. I love it!”

Susan Sarandon, mother of three, tells People magazine about feeling sexy and desirable at age 65. Can we just take a moment to appreciate the fact that this woman is 65? She looks incredible, and I love her outlook on life, even though she makes me feel old and frumpy by comparison. [People]

“I don’t understand how you can be so anxious to populate the world with children who can’t afford to get an education or are going hungry. It’s wonderful to have a family but it takes money. We’re in an election right now where there’s a lot of talk about how the government is not supposed to make it easy for you to get health care, education, food, or any of the things you need to give a child a chance to be a contributing member of society. I don’t understand how that works? If you don’t have control over your reproductive system as a woman, then who steps in to help you? Clearly, abstinence doesn’t work, and we’re living in an age where a lot of gentlemen don’t take responsibility for the children they’re so happy to give to women. So who helps? …  Are the Republicans suggesting that they take care of all the children that are born when you don’t have birth control available to you when you’re a poor woman? Do these guys not understand what it takes to raise a child, financially and time-wise? They sound like complete idiots!”

– Susan Sarandon reminds me why she’s my favorite feminist in Hollywood (and not just because she played the mom in the “Little Women” remake). Elsewhere in this interview she calls Rush Limbaugh “a Barnum & Bailey showman” who “doesn’t care who he endangers or what it means” and when asked about dating her much-younger business partner after she split from Tim Robbins, goes off on the double standard against sexual women. She’s also playing “four or five different men” in a movie version of the novel Cloud Atlas, which sounds wild. LOVE HER. [The Daily Beast]

  • Susan Sarandon was interviewed this weekend at the Hamptons Film Festival and referred to the Pope as a “Nazi.” (Pope Benedict XVI, a German, did have connections to Hitler Youth as a child — as did many Germans.) I’m a huuuge Susan Sarandon fan, but calling someone a “Nazi” is balls-out rude. It’ll be a fun week to be Susan Sarandon’s publicist, huh? [UsWeekly]
  • Rooney Mara’s cover story in Vogue reveals an uncomfortable dinner with the actress and the “Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” director David Fincher where he jokes to her that she “can have a lettuce and a grape, a raisin if you must.” The reporter notes that Rooney ordered fish, but barely ate it and chatted with him about how she had to look like “a child” for the Lisbeth Salander role. Maybe Rooney Mara just wasn’t hungry that day. Nevertheless, it’s a disconcerting exchange to read. [Vogue]

Adam Sandler + Andy Samberg + Vanilla Ice + Ian Ziering + Susan Sarandon = The Best Cast Ever

Whoa—the casting news just won’t stop this week. The Hollywood Reporter has brought us some new details about the movie “I Hate You Dad” which will star Adam Sandler as a father who moves in with his son, Andy Samberg, and quickly begins to feud with his fiancee, Leighton Meester. Oh, but the casting choices only get more exciting from there. Our favorite mother/daughter duo—Eva Amurri and Susan Sarandon—will also be in this flick, with Susan playing a sexy older teacher who seduced Adam Sandler’s character when he was younger. She may or may not be Andy Samberg’s mama.

But—wait, it gets even better. Keep reading »

Celebs Who Endorse Donald Trump For President — And The Ones Who Don’t

If Donald Trump seriously runs for president (which I don’t think will happen, but still) and gets so much as one single vote in the primaries, I am moving to Canada. No ifs, ands or buts about it. The man who popularized frou-frou pompadours on men, trashy divorces, and the phrase “You’re fired!” is like a one-man encyclopedia entry for the phrase “ugly American.”

Whaddya know, a lot of celebs agree with me: Susan Sarandon, Cher, Tracy Morgan. And then there are the yokels who would actually “Vote Trump!” And there’s quite a few of them… Keep reading »

Vanity Fair Shoots A “Thelma & Louise” 20th-Anniversary Spread

That headline probably made you think, “Has it really been 20 years?” But for real, it’s been two decades since “Thelma & Louise” came out. Apparently, stars Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis headed to Florida last week to shoot an anniversary spread for Vanity Fair. We won’t get to see the photos for a few months, but I am crossing my fingers for a naked Brad Pitt cameo. [NY Post] Keep reading »

Susan Sarandon Hates Hearing Young Women Body Snark Themselves

susan sarandon photo

“I wouldn’t want to be 20 now. I know so much more, and I’m much more comfortable in my skin, saggy as it is. … When I hear young girls complaining about superficial things … You’re at the peak of your physical beauty right now! Just enjoy it and stop worrying about your thighs being too big. If you’re upset with how you look at 25, life’s going to be tough.”

Why Susan Sarandon Never Married Tim Robbins

“I’ve always liked the idea of choosing to be with somebody. I thought that if you didn’t get married you wouldn’t take each other for granted as easily. I don’t know if after twenty-something years that was still true.”

– Susan Sarandon explains why she never tied the knot with Tim Robbins, her former partner of 20+ years. Well, Susan, the two of you certainly lasted a lot longer than many married celebrity couples, so you did somethin’ right. Sigh. Still not over this breakup. [Telegraph UK via Huffington Post] Keep reading »

Susan Sarandon Working On A Ping-Pong Reality Show

susan sarandon photo

Susan Sarandon may have lost her marbles—or, uh, her ping pong balls. Last December, she and her dude of 23 years, Tim Robbins, split. Next thing you know, Susan was seen constantly hanging out with Jonathan Bricklin, a 31-year-old who is her fellow investor in SPiN, a ping-pong club in New York City. Now, Susan has announced that they are working on a reality TV show together about the ping-pongers who spend their days and nights at SPiN. “It won’t be the ‘Jersey Shore,’” says Susan, who also says she is the “Johnny Appleseed of ping-pong.” “It’s more of an episodic documentary. We’re trying to invent something you haven’t seen before that follows a bunch of people in this crazy little subculture. … We’re just in the early filming stages now.” Keep reading »
