September is a big month for magazines — it’s traditionally when the largest (i.e. heaviest!) issues come out, packing in the most advertising pages and helping to pad the bankroll for the rest of the year. Vogue‘s September issue is so major that it even had a documentary made about it. Last year, Halle Berry graced the cover; so who is it this year? Why, it’s the Great Kate! Kate Moss dishes on her new nuptials to Kills frontman Jamie Hince. While, yes, she is a supermodel, it’s nice to see someone over the age of 22 on the cover of a major fashion magazine. We should all be so lucky to age as gracefully as Carmen Dell’Orefice. Dell’Orefice started her modeling career when she covered Vogue in 1947. At 80, she’s still walking the runways. Most recently, she’s walked for John Galliano, Hermes and Alberta Ferretti. Dear Universe, this is how I want my life to play out. [HP] Keep reading »
“It was the most incredulous moment that you’d never want to happen … I couldn’t find [my teeth]! Did they fall into the soup? These things are so expensive they could feed a small village. I was like Lucille Ball on crack, diving under the table like a porpoise … Age sucks. And thank God my boyfriend wasn’t there.”
—Janice Dickinson, who we so wish would return for the next season on “America’s Next Top Model,” tells Page Six an amazing story about losing two false teeth while at a super shmancy restaurant in the Hamptons. In the end she found her teeth on the floor, washed them off, and popped them back her mouth. I dunno, I think her boyfriend—who is 24 years her junior—might have been amused. Maybe he would have sung a round of “All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth?” [NY Post] Keep reading »
Cindy Crawford, the original ’90s supermodel, looks damn fine at 45. Here she is on the cover of this month’s Vogue vamping it up in a leather jacket and looking absolutely radiant. I’ll have what she’s having. [Fashionista] Keep reading »
“If I had to go back to catwalk presentations I would be in a panic .. .Already the models I find are too skinny, too sad. And I knew the age of the super top models, Linda Evangelista and Cindy Crawford, who were always lively and smiling. Today you go between several défilés and you will see the exact same type of girl — it just doesn’t inspire me. Of course I do presentations, I do three presentations a year: spring, fall and cruise, that I show at my showroom and what I like is to have the buyers come to me. They buy, things sell well, and that really gives me the feeling of existing for something because I know that somewhere out there in the world I have clients that adore what I’m doing and that’s really reward enough.”
–Designer Herve Leger, whose legendary bandage dresses are worn by every young starlet ever, on the sad state of skinny models today. Leger does stlll do catwalk shows for his Max Azria collections. [Vogue UK] Keep reading »
Sixteen-year-old, 5’10″ supermodel-in-the-making Lindsey Wixson is the star of the Alexander McQueen spring 2011 ad campaign. The teenager appears lost in a sea of butterflies. We like. [The Cut] Keep reading »
Supposedly, a controversial supermodel is recording her first album. The fact that she’s been caught up in numerous scandals will probably sell more records. Who is it?
“It’s a different time. We are now going through a period of a lot of Eastern European. It’s more about their look than their personalities. It was the most terrifying thing to do fittings with supermodels, because they would come in and look at your Polaroid board and count how many outfits they had, what order they came out in, and who were they next to. They would say things like, ‘She is taller than me, and I am not coming out after her,’ ‘How come she has three outfits, and I only have two,’ and ‘I want that outfit.’ They’d literally pull the Polaroid off the board and say they want to wear this. There was a reason they were supermodels, though. When they put on an outfit, everyone was floored.”
– Anna Sui, remembering a time when supermodels ruled the catwalk and the casting call. Click on the source link to read how Karl Lagerfeld first became aware of Anna. [Fashionologie] Keep reading »
International crisis alert! Supermodel and all-around babe Natalia Vodianova dared to show up at the Harper’s Bazaar Women of the Year ceremony night before last with legs that had not been shaved. I know! You can hardly believe it either. The Daily Mail dedicated an entire article to this body hair situation (as did we, apparently), and, get this, Vodianova had the nerve to flaunt her fur by pulling up her skirt for the photographers. Not only that! Coco Perez has previously documented sightings of the model’s thigh hair. As StyleList points out, she’s a mother of three, so maybe she didn’t have time to get out the razor. Check out the hair concern here, if you so desire. [StyleList] Keep reading »
