Bad Ideas: There Is A Chinese Sunglasses Company Called Helen Keller

Look, I can’t even pretend like I can read Mandarin or Cantonese. All I know is that I was scanning a story on the English-language website China Daily and there was an ad for a company called Helen Keller on the bottom, so of course I clicked on it. Helen Keller, it seems, is a very poorly named eyewear company in China. I mean, you just don’t name your company after America’s most famous blind deaf mute, do you now? [Helen Keller]

As much as I love my sunglasses, I’m in a constant state of losing them. It’s usually my favorite pair that I “misplace,” given that I’m always carrying them with me, and it usually ends in tears. There’s just way too many places to casually leave them and then forget about them just as casually. They also happen to be ridiculously easy to break and scratch, what with the bending arms and fragile lenses. After losing three pairs of Ray-Bans in the past two years, the days of shelling out for a designer pair are over, and I’ve become a connoisseur on the quest for good-looking, decent quality sunglasses that I won’t have a panic attack over if I leave them somewhere. I am a huge fan of bold sunglasses. In fact, I have a few pairs in my personal collection that even Snooki might think were a bit much. But these — which are basically a pile of skulls and feathers glued to the top of a pair of specs that were not that cute in the first place — kind of make my heart hurt. My head too, because those suckers can’t be light. And my wallet, most of all, because their original price was a cool $350. Ouch. [$175 on sale, Karmaloop]

Now she has teamed up with American designer Jeremy Scott to create the most ridiculous and pointless pair of (non) sunglasses we’ve ever seen. Why opt for shades with UV protectant lenses when you can just cover half your face with a giant pair of stranger hands? And good luck seeing anything at all through the Hooker Red manicure. Would You Wear: Prada Customizable Sunglasses?

We’re reluctant to admit it out loud, but isn’t the point of wearing designer glasses to wear designer glasses and feel the smug satisfaction of your status logo beaming from the corners of your eyes? Prada has just released customizable sunglasses so that the wearer can choose two letters to show off. This would then erase all the importance that comes with the power logo on your purchase. Unless … the customizable glasses become so recognizable that they become even higher status symbols? Or maybe people just want to wear them because they’re cute, which is a valid answer as well.
