Oprah’s Network To Air Documentary “Becoming Chaz” About Cher’s Transgender Son

You might expect movies to go straight from the uber-crunchy Sundance Film Festival to, say, the uber-crunchy Independent Film Channel (IFC). But one Sundance documentary of serious cultural import will go a more mainstream route: Oprah’s new network, OWN, will air the television premiere of “Becoming Chaz,” about Chaz Bono‘s gender reassignment surgery. Chaz, the transgender son of Cher and Sonny Bono, was born “Chastity.” But he realized his true self was male and has gone through the long process to make the physical and emotional transformation. (Luckily he has the support of his femme girlfriend of four years, Jennifer Elia.) “Becoming Chaz” debuts at Sundance on January 23 and should air on OWN in May. I’m super-happy that OWN is using its mainstream appeal to give transgendered men and women visibility (than, say, the catchphrase “hot tranny mess”). I’m hoping Cher speaks up in the documentary, too, even if it’s just to tell other parents of transgender kids that she, too, sometimes forgets not to call her son “her”! A Beastie Boys Biopic Is In The Works

Picture this: Seth Rogen, Elijah Wood, and Danny McBride as Mike D, Ad-Rock, and MCA. Yup, Beastie Boy Adam Yauch is directing a short biopic about the making of the song “(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!).” “Fight For Your Right Revisited” will premiere at the Sundance Short Film Festival. Oh-so excited to see anything having to do with the Beastie Boys. I believe this gives us all license to ill. [Sterogum] Keep reading »

James Franco’s New Performance Art Dissects “Three’s Company”

I was just about to forgive James Franco for signing on to appear in 20 episodes of “General Hospital” and calling it “performance art,” when I caught wind of his latest project. In his downtime from being a beat poet (“Howl”) and cutting off his arm (“127 Hours”), he has been hard at work on an adaptation of the late-’70s television show “Three’s Company.” Keep reading »

The Best Film No One Knows About Yet

I spent my Christmas vacation in Dublin. After too much Guinness and too many hurricane-like rainstorms, my friends and I decided to duck into the Irish Film Institute to get warm and dry. It turned out to be a fantastic decision. Right as we slogged in, the film “Nowhere Boy” was about to begin. We grabbed some hot chocolate (they actually served real hot chocolate at the theater!) and took our seats. I knew nothing whatsoever about the film—I had never even heard about it before that moment. As it turned out, “Nowhere Boy”—which has not been released yet in the States—is the first film by avant-garde artist Sam Taylor-Wood. It’s a historical account of John Lennon’s late teenage years in Merseyside. Sure, I consider myself a Beatles fan. But about two seconds into the film, I became a huge fan of someone else—Aaron Johnson, the 19-year-old actor who plays John Lennon in the film. I’m not usually the type to get pervy crushes on young boys, but his hotness was off the Richter. I just couldn’t help myself. I think I actually drooled. Where the hell has he been hiding out? The Daily Hotness: Jay Bakker

The only boy who could ever teach me, was the son of a preacher man! And I’m a Jew. But let’s face it, Tammy Faye Bakker’s baby is a full grown hottie. From the sleeve tats to the soulful talk, I couldn’t get enough of Jay on his Sundance channel reality TV show. And now the punky pastor has turned model in the new Kenneth Cole campaign. He’s so hip for being square! Who knew the Bible would make such a stylish accessory? [World of Wonder] Keep reading »

Isabella Rossellini Investigates Bug Love

While Isabella Rossellini may be known for her roles in Alias and Death Becomes Her, she’s now helping to answer the question people have been asking since the beginning of time — how do insects do it? Isabella’s short film series Green Porno will get to the bottom of this. Personally, we’re hoping the film delves into which insect has the best sex life — our guess is that spiders might have a tough time wrapping their…err, legs around it, with all of those appendages getting in the way. But check out these beetles doing it doggy style — sensual! Green Porno will be available on iTunes and streaming on sundance.org/festival beginning January 18. [Yahoo News]
