Buying Guide: How To Shop For All Kinds Of Candles

Let’s be honest: Shopping for candles is a fairly thoughtless task. If we do spend more than 3 seconds mulling over whether to buy one candle over another, it’s mainly for scent reasons. But whether it was a taper that dripped all over the table or a pillar that burned so unevenly that you’d think it was placed at a 90 degree angle, we’ve all gotten ripped off in this department. And even if it’s a question of $5, it’s $5 more than we’d like to lose on a purchase.

It doesn’t have to be that way. These tried-and-true simple shopping tips will reliably guide you to a quality candle … at any price point. Read more…

Decor Tips That’ll Make Your Family Stop Fighting

Your home is filled with sights, sounds, and scents. Which ones should you select to build positive relationships among the members of your family? This is the third article in a three part series about using home design to enhance family ties.

Oscar-winning actress Hilary Swank keeps a relatively low profile in Hollywood, so we’re not surprised to see that her New York apartment, which is featured in the latest issue of Elle Decor, is all about serenity and comfort. So it’s no wonder that the coziness of her dwelling ranks higher than the square-footage of the space for Hilary. “I feel comforted in smaller spaces,” Hilary tells the magazine. “They’re more nurturing.” And looking at the clean-lined furnishings and the soothing color palette in the home, we can definitely see how the apartment helps Hilary relax. Our favorite part of the apartment? Hilary’s (very) eclectic collection of artifacts ranging from a series of hand-forged scissors (strangely intriguing) to African headrests (also oddly interesting).

As we geared up for our guide to getting rid of mice, we asked you for your awful rodent stories. (Because seriously, you’re not alone.) We got a great response, but our favorite is the story of how a mouse made a nest in a car’s glove compartment.

Now to the good part: We had a self-proclaimed “mouse-ologist” test the top seven ways to get rid of mice. This expert is more of a casual one, having reportedly seen at least a dozen mice during their tenure as a college resident advisor. The tester, along with their college, will remain anonymous.  Keep reading »
