  • Oh, this is big. Vogue editrix Anna Wintour is taking on the additional role of artistic director at Condé Nast, a new title they’ve created just for her. She’ll be assuming some of the responsibilities once held by S.I. Newhouse Jr., who has controlled the editorial managerial side of Condé as chairman for over three decades. [New York Times]
  • What’s one more Baldwin in the family business? Alec’s 17-year-old daughter Ireland (yep, that “ungrateful little pig”) has landed her first modeling deal, signing with both Two Management in Los Angeles and IMG in New York. She’s 6’2! [The Daily Beast]
  • Givenchy head honcho Riccardo Tisci is the designer behind all of the custom Givenchy Haute Couture costumes Rihanna will wear on her Diamonds World Tour. Tisci says of the singer, “She offers intelligence, energy and pure beauty. Rihanna has what every girl aspires to have. She is the face of her generation.” [Telegraph]
  • Effective immediately, the European Union has banned all sales of cosmetics containing ingredients that have been tested on animals. A couple of loopholes: if an ingredient is classified as “pharmaceutical” and has been tested on animals, it’s fine, and as for products made outside of the EU using animal tests, they can still be sold if manufacturers can prove their safety without using data based on said animal tests. Hmmmm. [Sustainable Business]

Oh Great, UV Lights Used For Gel Manicures May Cause Skin Cancer

Neon Nails Illegal
We know neon nails are technically illegal, but here's the reason why. Read More »
Oz The Great and Powerful
Check out the official trailer! Read More »
  • Gel manicures are fairly new, and like many things, they come with a host of pros (like staying glossy and chip-free for over 2 weeks) and cons (we know from experience that they absolutely destroy your natural nails). But you might want to rethink your Shellac the next time you set foot in the salon: a new study says that the UVA rays emitted from the drying lamps can cause skin cancer. [Hollywood Life]
  • The original “Wizard of Oz” isn’t exactly known for its resplendent costuming — you can chalk it up to the film having been made in 1939 — but this month’s “Oz the Great and Powerful” may very well be. Over 2,000 costumes are paraded throughout the film, and every single of them is rumored to be outstanding. [Fashionista]
  • Haven’t heard of Betty Halbreich? You’re not alone — but you are missing out. The 85-year-old personal shopper has been guiding guests at Bergdorf Goodman since 1976, becoming something of a legend in the industry along the way. Once you get familiar with her inspiring story, you will completely understand why Lena Dunham is penning a new HBO series about her. [Refinery29]
  • A new study of ancient beaded jewelry discovered in a South African cave shows that trends have existed for much, much longer than we think: it appears that even ancient humans dating back as early as 75,000 years ago were concerned about la mode, avoiding outdated styles and changing up the way things were made in accordance with “social norms” or customized style. • Anne Hathaway owed someone an apology regarding her appearance on Oscar night (and no, that “someone” isn’t all of us after we were forced to stare at what appeared to be her nipples all evening). You see, Anne was supposed to wear a couture dress by Valentino, but she flipped out and grabbed that Prada at the last minute after catching wind that Amanda Seyfried was wearing a similar dress. The house of Valentino even announced beforehand that Anne would be wearing Valentino… and then she didn’t. Disappointment abounds! Here’s the Best Supporting Actress winner’s public apology. [Huffington Post]
  • Noooooo! Calvin Klein’s erstwhile boytoy/talking monkey (such a cool party trick) Nick Gruber is no longer writing a tell-all about his two-year relationship with the designer. Despite a bidding war and what Gruber describes as “a ton of interest” in the memoir, the model said of the deal, “I just did not want to hurt him or others. I am a good person, not a mean person.” I suspect bribery. [The Cut]
  • Carine Roitfeld and “Mob Wives” are seemingly on opposing ends of the class spectrum, but leave it to irreverent Carine to go where no upmarket fashion editor has gone before. The former Vogue Paris editor-in-chief spent a day shooting with Big Ang and the gang for the second issue of CR Fashion Book and loved every trashy minute of it. [Styleite]

Galliano Caught On Tape
The Dior designer was caught on tape using anti-Semitic slurs. Read More »
  • Well, that’s one way to get fired: Phivos Lampros Istavrioglou (what a name), the head of international relations at French fashion brand Moncler, has been accused of one major art heist. He was arrested at JFK airport for the theft of ‘Cartel Des Don Juan Tenorio 1949,’ a $150,000 Salvador Dali painting (shown), from an Upper East Side art gallery last year. [Business Insider]
  • Race relations are always a popular topic in fashion, thanks in part to the industry’s reputation for being maybe just the slightest bit obtuse. At New York Fashion Week this season, critics noticed that there was less racial diversity than ever. Jezebel crunched the numbers, and here’s what they found… [Jezebel]
  • Rihanna has another collaboration to add to her roster, and it isn’t musical this time. Just a few days after her design collab with British brand River Island went down the runway, the controversial singer has announced plans to partner with MAC Cosmetics. Like, really partner — RiRi has signed on to have a hand in four distinct color lines set to launch throughout this year. I guess that’s what you get for wearing Ruby Woo almost every time you’re photographed! [Refinery29]
  • You’ll recall that John Galliano made waves in his Hasidic get-up during New York Fashion Week. Writers at Conan got in touch with the disgraced designer’s brother Joe, who actually does wear Jewish hats. Like, real Jewish hats, trimmed with bagels, dreidels, aaaaaand a circumcised banana. Yeah. Watch it! [The Cut]

  • Well, this is troubling: after Oscar de la Renta charitably allowed disgraced Dior designer John Galliano (who played a fun game of anti-Semitic dress-up just days ago) to have a hand in designing his Autumn/Winter 2013 collection, rumors abound that this could be part of the process of priming Galliano to take over for de la Renta, 80, when he retires. Ouch. [Refinery29]
  • As far as celebrities-turned-designers go, Matthew McConaughey was one of the very last guys we’d ever expect to start a menswear line… and yet JKL, inspired by his Just Keep Livin Foundation, is about to be a thing. Bizarrely, the collection will include shirts. [Huffington Post]
  • Add lingerie sales to the growing list of things that the immense, unprecedented popularity of “Fifty Shades of Grey” has helped to proliferate. Riiiiiight next to whips, chains, and Ben Wa balls. [New York Times]

  • As the closer to the Chanel couture show, Karl Lagerfeld sent two wedding dress-clad female models down the runway hand in hand to show his support of marriage equality. • As if we needed more reasons to drool over Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming adaptation of “The Great Gatsby” — Miuccia Prada, of Prada and Miu Miu, designed 40 dresses for the film. Check out 4 of the sketches, all adapted from past Prada or Miu Miu collections. Ugh, such a tease! When is this thing out already? [Telegraph] Keep reading »
