Style Inspiration: Leslie Knope’s Anchor Obsession

Yesterday I spent a few hours parked on my couch drinking wine and binge-watching “Parks & Rec.” It was glorious. I couldn’t help but notice, over the course of five or six episodes, that Leslie Knope displays a particular fondness for anchor prints, wearing both this Equipment blouse (which is sold out, sadly) and this Madewell anchor sweater (currently sold out on the Madewell site, but available on Shopbop). Since I’m always eager to copy anything and everything Leslie does, I thought I’d round up a few other anchor-themed pieces for anyone who wants to bring a little nautical Knope swagger into their wardrobe. Random Style Inspiration: The Grand Ole Opry

This past weekend Nick and I went to The Grand Ole Opry and it. was. awesome. The auditorium itself was beautiful, and I was blown away by performances by Rhonda Vincent (seriously, watch her bluegrass version of “Jolene” and try not to fall in love with her!), The Striking Matches, and a bunch of classic country crooners paying tribute to the late George Jones. But my favorite thing about it? The fashion, of course! From the 80-year-old guys wearing sequined blazers to the preponderance of cowboy hats and bolo ties in the audience, it was country-fried glamour at its best. I couldn’t resist seeking out a few Opry-inspired must haves. Get the shopping details after the jump! Keep reading »

Style Inspiration: Amy From “Enlightened”

I started watching HBO’s “Enlightened” for the same reason I’ve started watching pretty much all of my favorite shows: Amelia was like, “Dude, you HAVE to watch this show.” And as usual, she was totally right, because within three episodes this show had completely stolen my heart. I love it so much. It’s a breath of fresh air. If you don’t watch it yet, here are 10 reasons you should start, but if you’re already watching (Good! Keep it up!), then you know the main character, Amy Jellicoe, played by the amazing Laura Dern, is always striving for a better, brighter, lighter life–and she makes sure to dress the part. Want to steal her sunny style? We’ve got all the pieces (for $100 or less!) after the jump… Keep reading »

Style Inspiration: Miami Right Now

The new season of “Kourtney & Kim Take Miami” premieres this weekend, which means I’ll be sitting inside my cold NYC apartment suffering from serious location envy. But even if I — and you — can’t fit in a jaunt to the southern Florida hot spot, doesn’t mean we can’t take some style cues from the city for which I’m sure the world “sultry” was invented. Think bright colors and lots of white, sequins and cutouts, extreme lengths — maxi or mini — and sandals and wedges that can be paired with anything. Now, if only the weather would warm up around these parts… Keep reading »

Style Inspiration: Jane From “Happy Endings”

Do you guys watch “Happy Endings”? My boyfriend forced me to watch an episode a while back and now I’m officially hooked. Every character on the show is impeccably styled, but the group’s perfectionist control freak Jane Kerkovich-Williams always looks so freakin’ fabulous. Her aesthetic is very professional and preppy, with attention to accessories and details: her nail polish colors are always ah-mah-zing, and you’ll never see her without a belt defining her waistline. Want to snag this chic Jane outfit for yourself? Get all the shopping details after the jump! Keep reading »

Style Inspiration: Michelle Obama’s Hearts And Stripes

This weekend, the Barack Obama Facebook page posted this picture of the first couple attending a Veteran’s Day ceremony. My friend Molly immediately sent me the link along with the message, “What is Michelle wearing?! I want it!” I did some sleuthing (and by “sleuthing” I mean I went to the awesome website “Mrs. O,” which tirelessly chronicles all of Michelle’s fashion choices, and typed in “striped sweater”) and found out the photo is actually from last year, and the divine Miss O’s sweater is a Sonia Rykiel creation that’s no longer available. Sad, yes, but I found three other fabulous sweaters that feature hearts and stripes, and the best part? They’re all less than 100 bucks. Get the shopping details after the jump! Keep reading »

Style Inspiration: Kalinda From “The Good Wife”

One night during our weekend in Nashville, my boyfriend Nick and I staggered back to our hotel in the rain after eating a huge meal. We immediately collapsed on the bed, and Nick reached for the remote. Nick has a habit of watching the most random TV shows whenever we’re staying in a hotel, and this time he didn’t disappoint: he flipped through the channels and finally settled on a half-over rerun of “The Good Wife.” “Nick, come on!” I objected, “We’ve never even seen a full episode of this show!” But by the time I had finished my sentence I’d been sucked into the legal drama, and 20 minutes later we were like, “Cool! Let’s watch this all the time!”

The show is overflowing with rich, fashionable lawyers, but one of my favorite characters (and wardrobes) is Kalinda, a private investigator who favors dark leather and military details. I found a few Kalinda-inspired pieces to add some edge to your fall look. Shopping details after the jump! Keep reading »

Unlikely Style Inspiration: The Sister Witches Of “Hocus Pocus”

The 1993 Disney Halloween comedy “Hocus Pocus” is straight-up one of my favorite movies of all time. I assume everyone has seen it already, but if not, I wouldn’t want to ruin it for you — you just have to watch it, with or without the under-16 audience for which it’s intended. Halloween may be just around the corner, but I’m not spooked to admit that I seek to channel a little bit of “Hocus Pocus” every day of the year (it does star the future Carrie Bradshaw, after all). You can cop the hip witch look, too — just add chunky jewelry and black boots and go, no broomstick required. Keep reading »

Halloween Costume Inspiration: Jayne Mansfield

First there was Marilyn, and then there was Jayne. Busty, (bottle) blonde, and ribald, Mansfield became known as the “Working Man’s Monroe” for both her physical likeness to Norma Jeane and her own brand of salacious, exaggeratedly sexual appeal. “Hollywood’s smartest dumb blonde” had a genius IQ and was fluent in five languages, but she knew full well that the public didn’t care about her brains; rather, they were far more interested in her 40-21-35 dimensions.

A pledged member ― the High Priestess, in fact ― of Anton LaVey’s Church of Satan, it was rumored that Jayne sold her soul for fame and fortune and suffered the consequences: a grisly car accident death that saw the stunning young actress and American sex symbol nearly decapitated, while her three children under the age of 5, including her now-famous daughter, Mariska Hargitay, looked on from the backseat. Beautiful, brilliant, bizarre: Mansfield lives on as one of the most fascinating pop figures of the last century. Whatever you do, don’t forget a touch of pink. Keep reading »

Halloween Costume Inspiration: Kristen Stewart At Her Finest

Everything you need for a spooktastic Halloween. Read More »

Rest assured, you’ve got a couple of weeks to prepare your costume before the Halloween party invitations start rolling in, but why don’t we start off with something that’s especially easy to, um, swallow should you find yourself in a spectacular rush come October 30? Mid-scandal Kristen Stewart is only the easiest, most timely costume ever, and all you really need is some greasy hair and a pair of sweatpants to pull it off — bonus points if you can find a married man willing to bend you over a fence, and maybe some other stuff. Plus, you can probably find all of the required items already in your closet… or your boyfriend’s. Or your married director’s. Just fling your hair, bite your lip, and go! Keep reading »
