prince

There’s really only one man who can get away with wearing a blouse, and that’s Mr. Purple Rain himself, Prince. Nearly 30 years after “Purple Rain” debuted, Prince is still killing it style-wise, and the recent Twitter convert’s music is still as relevant and sexy as ever. Seriously, did you hear his new track, “Breakfast Can Wait”? But how do you wear Prince? Very carefully, as it turns out. Very carefully.

We were intrigued by the possibility of taking his purple-suited awesomeness and translating it into a modern, lady-friendly look (though you’ll have to find your own hair mousse, sorry). Click through to see just how we did.

Unlikely Style Icon: Brat Pitt In “Interview WIth The Vampire”

Before there was Team Edward and Team Jacob, sparklevamps,”The Vampire Diaries,” and “True Blood,” there was just Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise and baby Kirsten Dunst. Yup, “Interview With A Vampire,” was the best vamp movie of recent years. And Brad Pitt has never looked better than when he was playing reluctant vamp Louis de Pointe du Lac opposite Cruise’s pervy, bloodlusty Lestat de Lioncourt. In honor of Brad and his cool Victorian vampire style, we’ve given you all the key elements to steal his iconic goth-y vampire look. Deets after the jump! Keep reading »

Lady Gaga Learned Everything She Knows From Leigh Bowery

While I really can’t stand much of Lady Gaga’s music, the bitch does know how to style herself so that everybody’s talking about her all the time. Like, take the weird outfit she wore to the airport in Spain this past weekend. It’s so bulbous and ungainly and unflattering, but in a totally pointed way. But you know? Her style? It’s kind of a rip-off/homage to another incredible artist: Leigh Bowery. I’m not the first to see the connection between the two — it’s been written about and noted by everyone from Colette to Vogue — but the genius and dark subversion of Bowery’s work has to be seen to be believed. Style Retrospective: The Fashion Bravery Of Anna Piaggi

RIP Anna Piaggi
The fashion legend has died at age 81. Read More »

Muse and Vogue editor Anna Piaggi passed away earlier this week at 81, a style innovator and rebel to the last. Piaggi’s wild style put her in the ranks with other non-traditional fashion icons, like Zandra Rhoades, Isabella Blow and Anna Dello Russo. Her aesthetic was rooted in exaggerated forms and extensive layering, paired with her signature accessory — the top hat.

In 2006, Piaggi’s genius was recognized with an exhibition at London’s Victoria & Albert Museum, and she counted Karl Lagerfeld and Vivienne Westwood among her close friends.

Above, we’ve selected several of our favorite, most outrageous Piaggi looks.

Who’s That Girl: Model Anna Albrekht Channels Patti Smith

There’s only one Patti Smith, but that doesn’t mean people won’t forever be copping her signature look and style. For the latest issue of Helmet magazine, model Anna Albrekht does her best Patti impression, for a series of photos that seem modeled after the ones found in Judy Linn’s recent collection of Smith photographs. Linn and Smith are close friends, and Linn’s taken Patti’s portrait hundreds of times over the course of their friendship. Albrekht does an admirable job of aping Patti’s unique style and vibe. Faye Dunaway is one of the world’s all-time beauties. And Faye Dunaway in “Bonnie and Clyde” is absolutely beyond belief. Faye’s gap-tooth gorgeousness is put to good use in the rollicking bang-em-up, and the styling in the film is through the roof. Costume designer Theodora van Runkle earned an Oscar nomination for her work on the picture, and we’re totally in love with the slim ’30s skirts, slightly askew berets and tight-fitting suits and sweaters that were Bonnie’s signature look. After the jump, we show you how to get Bonnie’s awesome style. Gun and Warren Beatty optional.

Vintage Style Inspiration: Brigitte Bardot

It’s easy to see why Brigitte Bardot was a style icon: she was a sex symbol, a trendsetter, and her outfits from the ’60s and ’70s still look fresh today. I’ve always loved this photo of her in cropped polka-dot pants, a simple white tank, and ballet flats. It’s so fresh and summery, and easy to recreate with this season’s printed denim trend. After the jump, our modern take on Brigitte’s outfit, and all the shopping details to get the look for yourself… Keep reading »
