Tavi Lends Her Voice To A New Animated Short Film

It’s hard not to love Tavi. I’m generally opposed to any and all things “twee,” but Tavi has enough brains and sass to transcend the genre. When I first heard about this “13-year-old fashion blogger” a couple years ago, I envisioned a delusional, entitled teen brandishing her mother’s Birkin bag, shooting photos of herself on a $1,000+ digital camera she got for her birthday (thank god that kind of thing is mostly relegated to my hometown). In other words, a childlike slip of a girl with wide, unsettling eyes and an old soul was not the image that sprung to mind — but that’s Tavi! At first, I was a skeptic; now, I’m a fan … and pretty much everyone else is, too. Keep reading »

It seems the love affair between teen wunderkind style blogger Tavi Gevinson and Sassy magazine creator Jane Pratt may be coming to a close. Tavi originally signed on to be a part of Pratt’s new website xoJane, and was meant to bring the teen voice and angle to the publication. But when Pratt’s site launched earlier this year, the Style Rookie blogger’s influence was nowhere to be found. Now it seems that Gevinson has decided that xoJane’s parent corporation, Say Media, isn’t anyone she wants to work with. Instead, Gevinson is going independent for her new magazine venture, Rookie. “It was just that I want to have full control, and it’s important to me that we’re independent, not so that we can be indie and ‘down with the Man,’ but because I find a lot of comfort knowing that it’s all in my control,” said Gevinson in a statement. Given Gevinson’s love of all things ’90s (Riot Grrl, Courtney Love, “My So-Called Life”), we’re not surprised she’s decided to invoke a DIY spirit. Tavi Gevinson Is Going To Write A Book About Being Tavi Gevinson, Sort Of

Fashion’s favorite teenage blogger Tavi Gevinson has a new book project in the works. After spending the night at a sleepover with Marisa Meltzer, the co-author of How Sassy Changed My Life (full disclosure: I’m interviewed in that book, are you jealz?), Gevinson and Meltzer cooked up a project tentatively titled Diary that’s one part DIY scrapbook of Gevinson’s blog Style Rookie, and one part art collage, featuring work from Miranda July and Rodarte designers Laura and Kate Mulleavy. Fashion blogger Tavi Gevinson is a 14-year-old fashion phenom. She’s the adorable and precocious writer behind the blog “Style Rookie”. She was also recently described by New Yorker writer Lizzie Widdicombe as “curvy.” In fact, said Widdicombe, “the dress was sleeveless and you could see that her figure had changed dramatically since the earliest days of her blog. Is Tavi becoming a case of too-much, too-soon?

The latest news: The 13-year-old blogger has been “hired” by Harper’s Bazaar to write copy for its January issue, which would seem like the magazine is treating the teen fashion blogger as an ingénue. Other editors, however, are taking issue with this move. Huffington Post style editor Lesley Blume tells New York magazine’s The Cut, “I think she’s very dear, but I think it’s crazy,” while Anne Slowey of Elle calls her “gimmicky.”

So what’s going on here? Is Tavi being taken advantage of? Or is her entrée into a career just exposing the world of fashion journalism for what it is? Here are our thoughts and feelings … Keep reading »

Tween Fashion Blogger Tavi Lands POP Magazine Cover

Our favorite tween fashion blogger Tavi may not have scored the cover of Love, but it looks like she has landed on the latest issue of POP magazine, whose first relaunch issue under new editor Dasha Zhukova is due out soon. The black and white cover shows the Style Rookie blogger wearing some rad sequined shorts in front of a Damien Hirst background. We can’t say for sure whether this cover is official—it was posted on Grazia’s blog this morning (a pretty credible source), but the link has disappeared. The pic, however, is starting to make the rounds, so we’re assuming it’s a leak. Either way, we’re happy to see the smart and wacky Tavi gaining recognition. [Fashion Copious] Keep reading »
