Golden Globes Style Inspiration: Dianna Agron’s Red Lace

Dianna Agron’s breathtakingly intricate red lace dress was one of my favorite looks at the Golden Globes. Surprisingly, it was also one of the most wearable trends (as opposed to, say, Angelina Jolie’s skintight white satin gown, which makes me break out in cellulite just thinking about it) to show up on the red carpet last night.

Layer a stretchy red lace top under a blazer. Rock a red lace skirt on a date or pair with a black cardigan for work. Still seem too risque? Try the trend in smaller doses like a cheeky bow-tie necklace or pretty underthings. Check out some awesome (and affordable!) red lace pieces after the jump… Keep reading »

A few years ago my friend Katelyn and I started our own New Year’s Eve tradition. We stay in, make dinner, drink wine, and spend the night reflecting on the last year and making up fun hippie rituals to usher in the new one (I hear this year’s festivities are going to include a ceramic chalice). Laid back NYE celebrations like mine might not require sequins or high heels, but they do require cute, comfortable basics, and slippers sturdy enough to pop out to the store for more wine if necessary. I started watching “Justified” because my boyfriend has a huge crush on Timothy Olyphant, who plays the main character, Raylan Givens. By the end of the first episode I’d discovered that it’s humanly impossible to not have a crush on Timothy Olyphant, but I was also intrigued by another character: Raylan’s ex-wife, Winona. Not only does she have the best name ever (I would know), she’s smart, tough, complicated, and she’s got great style: her court reporter job calls for pencil skirts and pretty blouses in a muted palette. Last weekend, I saw “The Artist,” a new French film set in the silent movie era, and shot as a silent movie would be. The film is charming and adorable — a must-see — and the clothes of the era are deftly highlighted. The gorgeous flapper dresses, cloche hats and curls the protagonist Peppy Miller wears made me long for the clothes of that era. While you can buy original 1920s and ’30s items for hundreds and even thousands of dollars, the less expensive bet is to go for reproductions of vintage pieces, or vintage-inspired works. We’ve found a handful for your perusal after the jump!

Style Inspiration: Downton Abbey

My boyfriend and I are obsessed with “Downton Abbey.” Like, completely obsessed. We watched all the episodes in the span of a week and are currently rewatching them. We love the drama and the writing and the characters, but truthfully, I would probably still watch it with the sound turned off because the sets and costumes are so breathtakingly beautiful. The series follows an aristocratic family from 1912 to 1919, and my god, the outfits these people wear to dinner! Alas, we can’t all dress like turn-of-the-century British nobility, but we can bring a little vintage extravagance into our wardrobes — especially during holiday party season. Click through to check out a few gorgeous modern-day pieces that would do the Crawley family proud…

After surveying the signature styles of cities like Paris, Rome, and London, I came home to Portland, a place known more for forestry than fashion sense. But contrary to popular belief, there’s more to Portland style than plaid flannel. People here favor casual dresses, cozy cardigans, pretty tights, and tough boots. Whimsical accessories are a must–this is, after all, the city that pioneered the “put a bird on it” movement. Click through to get the details on this quintessential P-Town outfit… Keep reading »

The other day I got a message from my friend Ariel, who works at an alternative preschool in Tuscon. She wanted to nominate an Unexpected Style Inspiration: her students. “At our school, the model is basically let kids do whatever they want, and they come up with fantastic outfits. Just today a little kid told me, ‘Mermaids are in. Dinosaurs are not.’” She sent along the descriptions of a few outfits her students had sported recently and I got to work converting them into (mostly) wearable adult versions. The deets on the outfit above, and two others, after the jump!  Keep reading »

Style Inspiration: Rome Right Now

Alright, we’ve covered the current looks of London and Paris, now it’s time to talk about Rome! This city is sexy, edgy, and colorful, and so is the fashion aesthetic. Women here love mixing masculine and feminine looks, trendy pieces with classics, and bright colors with more bright colors–then they jump on their Vespas and away they go. Here’s how to get the look…
