Have you guys been watching “Sherlock,” the modern-day Sherlock Holmes series on the BBC? I just started watching last week and it is, like, shockingly awesome. (Sherlockingly awesome? No. Sorry. Dianna Agron’s breathtakingly intricate red lace dress was one of my favorite looks at the Golden Globes. Surprisingly, it was also one of the most wearable trends (as opposed to, say, Angelina Jolie’s skintight white satin gown, which makes me break out in cellulite just thinking about it) to show up on the red carpet last night.

A few years ago my friend Katelyn and I started our own New Year’s Eve tradition. We stay in, make dinner, drink wine, and spend the night reflecting on the last year and making up fun hippie rituals to usher in the new one (I hear this year’s festivities are going to include a ceramic chalice). I started watching “Justified” because my boyfriend has a huge crush on Timothy Olyphant, who plays the main character, Raylan Givens. By the end of the first episode I’d discovered that it’s humanly impossible to not have a crush on Timothy Olyphant, but I was also intrigued by another character: Raylan’s ex-wife, Winona. Not only does she have the best name ever (I would know), she’s smart, tough, complicated, and she’s got great style: her court reporter job calls for pencil skirts and pretty blouses in a muted palette. Last weekend, I saw “The Artist,” a new French film set in the silent movie era, and shot as a silent movie would be. The film is charming and adorable — a must-see — and the clothes of the era are deftly highlighted. The gorgeous flapper dresses, cloche hats and curls the protagonist Peppy Miller wears made me long for the clothes of that era. While you can buy original 1920s and ’30s items for hundreds and even thousands of dollars, the less expensive bet is to go for reproductions of vintage pieces, or vintage-inspired works. My boyfriend and I are obsessed with “Downton Abbey.” Like, completely obsessed. We watched all the episodes in the span of a week and are currently rewatching them. We love the drama and the writing and the characters, but truthfully, I would probably still watch it with the sound turned off because the sets and costumes are so breathtakingly beautiful. The series follows an aristocratic family from 1912 to 1919, and my god, the outfits these people wear to dinner! Alas, we can’t all dress like turn-of-the-century British nobility, but we can bring a little vintage extravagance into our wardrobes — especially during holiday party season.
