Unlikely Style Icon: Lol From “This is England ’86″

Last week I watched “This is England ’86,” the follow up mini-series to the 2006 film “This is England,” about a crew of non-racist skinhead kids in England in the 1980s. Starring the same group of relative unknown featured in the original film, “This is England ’86″ centers on the story of Lol, a young skinhead girl who’s at a crossroads in her romantic relationship and who must make a difficult family decision. I fell in love with the actress playing Lol–Vicky McClure, and her mod skinhead style. Lol is tomboy-ish without losing her essential femininity, tough as nails but sweet to the core. Can We Stop Pretending Kate Middleton Is A Style Icon?

As Prince William and Kate Middleton have made their tour around Canada and the U.S., one thing everybody’s been over-the-moon obsessed with is what Kate’s wearing. I, for one, just don’t care. It’s not that I don’t think Kate’s a gorgeous girl with Pantene model hair — she’s clearly stunning and blah blah blah, the picture of English Rose beauty. Inspiration Board: Lauren Bacall

I was perusing a lifestyle blog yesterday and the subject of Lauren Bacall as a fashion icon came up. I’d heard the actress’ name thrown around with other style icons, like Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe, but I didn’t have a specific picture in my mind of Bacall. Off to our trusty photo agency, I went. While there were many photos of Bacall with husband Humphrey Bogart recording the program “Lux Radio Theatre” and attending industry events, I found the above photo most compelling. Bacall’s wry smile has just the right amount of cockiness to it. And she stands out from the background with a simple and chic pants outfit. Fashion inspiration can come from unexpected sources: a poem, an old picture of your great aunt, maybe a certain song about short skirts and long jackets. I once created an outfit based solely on the exquisite color combination found in my iced caramel macchiato.

Rachel Maddow has become one of these unexpected inspirations. I admire her immensely: she is a Rhodes scholar, an accomplished journalist, a gay rights advocate, an eloquent speaker, a lover of cocktails, and a rabble-rouser. Check This Out: “Audrey Hepburn: International Cover Girl”

Sometimes it’s more interesting to look at a life through secondary sources. Most of Audrey Hepburn‘s most iconic images come straight from old film stills or famous movie posters (raise your hand if at one point you had a “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” poster in your room … or still do). Now’s the chance to reflect on how the rest of the world framed the star in a new book called Audrey Hepburn: International Cover Girl. The stunning tome compiles tons of magazine covers that Ms. Hepburn graced, many of which you’ve probably never seen before. The collection puts the star in global perspective by digging up shoots from international publications in languages so obscure, we definitely can’t identify them off the bat. And yes, the clothes are insane.

The thing is, we kind of want to rip this book to shreds. That is, just so we could frame our favorite images of Audrey, and put them back up on our walls. Check out a couple of images after the jump! [Grazia]

Where Are All The Style Icons At?!

Liz Jones, a columnist for the U.K.’s Daily Mail thinks our generation has a problem — we don’t have any style icons! Sure, we’ve got women like Michelle Obama and Kate Moss to look to for style inspiration, but, according to Jones, not one woman in the twentysomething age bracket really deserves the title of “Style Icon.” And she’s got an extra special bone to pick with those who claim model Agyness Deyn DOES.

“Maybe I am old and jaded, but I don’t think she has a clue about style at all. I hate that this messy, un-put together look is deemed somehow ‘London’. That Agy has now joined a long line of cutting edge Brits (Kate Moss, Amy Winehouse and the lamentable Peaches Geldof) who demonstrate how non-conformist they are by dressing like tramps. But what is even more galling is that Agy and her ilk have created so many young female doppelgangers. If I see another twentysomething in black cutoff tights under a mini-skirt worn with ballet flats, I will want to kill myself.”
