Style 911: How Do I Make “Menswear” Feminine And Sexy?

“I keep wanting to try the menswear-inspired trend, but every time I try things on I feel like a manly cater-waiter. I really need help rocking that look in a sexier, more feminine way. Thanks!”– Laura

It’s pretty easy to cross the line from menswear-inspired to just plain dressing in drag, and once you cross said line, you quickly go from sexy to dowdy and just a tad confused-looking. But we’ve been hugely in love with menswear-inspired womenswear for a while now, so get ready for a whole lot of tricks and ideas. Keep reading »

Style 911: How Do I Accessorize A Simple LBD?

“A bunch of my friends are getting married over the next few months and I want to recycle a few of the dresses I already own. My favorite is a little black dress that’s pretty but maybe not exciting enough to just wear with black shoes and call it a day. How can I accessorize it to look more fun? Help!–Moira

Lucky for you, Moira, this is a actually a pretty easy thing to do. Most important is deciding which color group you want your accessories to fall under. (Nothing should be too matchy-matchy, but a general family of color is a good place to start.) We’re big fans of silver and pewter both with black and with several other colors (meaning that you could potentially reuse the accessories for other weddings with other dresses), so that’s where we’ll be looking. Style 911: How Can I Get Rid Of (And Prevent!) Deodorant Stains?

“It never fails: I’m rushing to get ready and get out the door in the morning and I end up getting deodorant stains all over my shirt or dress. Do you guys have any tips for getting the marks out or just preventing them altogether? I realize I could put my anti-perspirant on after I get dressed but sometimes I forget and with certain cuts you really have to put it on first ya know? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.”–Jillian

Hey Jillian, we seriously identify with your dilemma, as we just had a dry cleaner tell us they couldn’t get deo stains off our favorite navy blue silk shirt. Here’s how to get rid of them and how to never get them again! Keep reading »

Style 911: Can I Wear A Metallic Skirt To Work?

“I recently bough a metallic black pencil skirt thinking I’d wear it to work, but every time I put it on I feel waaay overdressed for the office. (And my office is dressy!) How do I wear metallic during the day? Is it even possible? Help!” – Lauren S.

Fret not, you can easily wear your new skirt to work, especially since you say your office is dressy. The key to wearing metallics during the day is keeping everything else simple. That means no crazy prints, shoes can be interesting but ideally monotone, and you probably shouldn’t get out of control with your accessories. We’ve got a few ideas after the jump. Keep reading »

Style 911: How Do I Wear A Jumper Without Looking Like A School Girl?

“At the end of last year’s winter season I got a super comfy and adorable jumper for a steal ($12!) thinking it would be a fall staple this year. Unfortunately I’m having difficulty wearing it without looking like I’m in elementary school. Any tips on how I can make this look more ‘grown-up’?” – Ekelt2

Having spent 10 years all jumpered-up in Catholic school, I feel your pain. If you don’t want to go quirky with the jumper, take references to other school girl accouterments and turn them on their heads. The school girl undertone will always be there with a jumper, so it’s really a matter of taking that aspect and controlling it. That means skip the mary janes, avoid a plain white blouse and tights should be a little more fun than the stark navy I had to wear back in the days when nuns ruled my wardrobe. The good news is that cutting out these additions still leaves you with quite a lot of other options. Outfit ideas after the jump!

Style 911: Is It Possible To Make My Tight Pants Bigger?

“I gained about 8 pounds (which I am totally fine with, BTW), but one thing that is annoying me is the fact that my skinniestjeans simply won’t button anymore. I can get them on and since they have a bit of stretch they look fine on my legs, but no amount of twisting and turning and laying on my back will allow me to button them. Is there anything I can do to get them to fit again. You know, besides losing weight?”–Rebecca

Actually Rebecca, we suspect you’re not all alone out there. A couple of suggestions, after the jump … Keep reading »

Style 911: What Shoes To Wear With Boyfriend Jeans?

“I recently bought a pair of boyfriend jeans that I love, but I have no idea what shoes to wear with them. Booties? Stilettos? Keep in mind that I live in Wisconsin, so flip flops, sandals or anything similar will not be a possibility in the freezing winter months!” – Meghan

Hey Meghan, boyfriend jeans are super cute but you definitely don’t wanna go and ruin a good thing with a pair of Uggs, ya know? (No offense to them — we wear Uggs all the time. In our house.) A couple ideas for you, after the jump! Keep reading »

Style 911: So I’m Broke …

“I just graduated college and unfortunately haven’t been able to find a job yet. Like any red blooded American female, I look forward to doing some shopping in the fall, but this year it’s kind of bummer since I have such low cash flow. Is there anything affordable I can buy to update my wardrobe for the season or will I have to wear my summer clothes and freeze?” – Liza

Here at The Frisky, we believe personal style has nothing to do with how much cashola is in your bank account. We’ve got some thrifty ideas for you, after the jump! Keep reading »

Style 911: How Can I Break A Bad Fashion Habit?

“I have a problem. I’m not only compelled to purchase weird-looking pants online, I also can’t stop myself from wearing said pants despite the fact that they are usually highly unflattering. There are my gray silk harem pants, my black Comme des Garcons for H&M drop-crotch trousers, pants with wide, exaggerated pockets and, I’m afraid to tell you, a pair of jeans that have a bustle affixed to the back. I love fashion and find joy in experimental and avant-garde clothing, but I’m afraid my passion has spilled over into fashion victim territory. Please help!”—Erin

Today on Style 911, a bit of self-help. Let’s talk poor sartorial choices, after the jump! Keep reading »

Style 911: Can I Wear Black To My Own Wedding?

“I’ve been reading The Frisky for a month or so (religiously!) and I thought this would be the place to get my questions answered. (You guys always seem to have the answers.) I’m getting married on Oct 31st of this year and want to know if it’s acceptable to wear a black wedding dress. I would pair it with an ivory shawl (in cashmere) with white pearls as accessories. Is this a fashion no-no? I just want something non-traditional and the bridal stores aren’t doing it for me. I’ve found this vintage black cocktail-type dress and hope that I can wear it! Thanks in advance!” – Melissa

Hey Melissa, what’s up? And welcome to The Frisky! Glad you’re here. I love your question because, personally, when it comes to fashion rules, I like to get all rebellious and say there are none. (Eh, OK, maybe just a few…) After the jump, let’s discuss whether a black dress can work for you on your wedding day or not. Keep reading »
