Style 911: How Do I Pull Off Sparkly Clothing?

I want to buy a few sparkly pieces but I’m not sure how to wear them without looking tacky. Any ideas? — Melanie

A general rule of thumb when wearing sequins and sparkles is to make sure you’re confining the shine to one piece rather than spreading it all up over your outfit. Take the jump for suggestions that’ll keep you looking classy in your sequins, not trashy. Keep reading »

It’s pretty warm out these days and I kind of want to wear my summer wardrobe. Is it too early? Every time I see girls dressed head to toe for summer in early April I can’t help but think it looks a little dumb.–Nina

The weather in New York right now is frickin’ gorgeous. It’s sunny, warm, birds are out, people are falling in love, etc. That said, if we see one more girl in a tank top, bootie shorts and flips-flops, we will rage out. The desire to take a spot of warm weather and act like it’s full-on summer is understandable — we all want to go there. But please, ladies, a little self-control. Style 911: How Do I Buy A First Suit?

I bought this gray pinstriped suit jacket the other day, and I really like it, but it was being sold in the separates section so I couldn’t find the pants that were supposed to go with it in my size. So … what CAN I wear it with? Are black pants acceptable? Navy? Should I cut my losses and return it?

Alternately, have you ever considered doing a post about suit rules? Two of my suitemates are about to graduate and last week we were all sitting in the kitchen trying to help one of them decide what to wear to an interview. I’m sure a lot of first time suit-buyers could use a guideline on what’s acceptable and what’s not. – Karen

Suits can suck pretty hard if done wrong. Take the jump for some tips on doing it right. Keep reading »

Style 911: How Do I Dress For A Bridal Shower?

I’m getting married next fall and I haven’t a clue what to wear to the three of four bridal showers between now and then. Any ideas? – Moira

When you’re planning your outfits, keep in mind that this is the bridal shower, not the bachelorette party. By which we mean your mom and several other people old enough to have birthed you will probably be there, so dress like an adult. Just make sure it’s a really cute adult by choosing something conservative in shape and whimsical in details. Keep reading »

Style 911: How Can I Wear A Suit Without Looking Like A Suit?

I just started a job in an office where Casual Fridays definitely don’t exist and all my co-workers seem to have business cool down with interesting accessories and tailored clothes that totally aren’t boring. I’d look lame in a regular suit, so I want to try something suit-ish but edgier. Where do I start? – Lauren

Style 911: Can I Wear A Fitted Dress To Work?

“Can I wear a fitted dress to work without looking inappropriate? How?!”– Lauren

If you want to wear form-fitting clothes to the office without looking too skanky for a work environment, there are two rules of thumb:

  1. If it’s fitted, it should be structured fit, not clingy knit. (I assure you, the rhyme was unintentional.)
  2. Pick shape, legs or boobs; you don’t get all three. What we mean by this is that a fitted dress should be close to knee-length and not low-cut. Take away either of those things and you’re getting into dangerously sexy territory.
  3. Accessorize that action.

Style 911: How Do I Wear Denim-On-Denim Without Looking Like A Prisoner?

I’ve been noticing a lot of head-to-toe denim in magazine pages. I thought this was a no-no, but I’m a little curious about the trend. Do you have any advice on how to make this look chic? — Jennifer

Denim-on-denim used to be a cardinal sin amongst the fashionable (too bad my 12-year-old self didn’t know that), but now it’s one of the biggest trends for spring. Style 911: How Do I Wear Strapless Without Looking Too Dressy?

Dear Frisky Style 911, My shoulder/neckline area is my favorite part of my body, so I really like wearing strapless things. There’s a problem though: I feel waaay over-dressed when I wear strapless clothes on a regular Saturday night out. How can I pull it off without looking like I’m going to the prom?–Lauren R.

Ahh yes, we’ve all been the girl in the too-dressy outfit trying not to look awkward in a bar at one time or another. Trite though this may sound, the first and best way not to look out of place is to appear confident. Standing around all night, shoulders sloped and constantly tugging your tube top up isn’t cute on anyone. That said, even confidence isn’t going to distract enough if you’re wearing a ballerina dress and everyone else is in blue jeans. After the jump, we’ll show you how to go strapless in a put-together, dressy way rather than an out-of-control/over-the-top way. Keep reading »
