I realize this post was not meant to be inspirational, but can someone PLEASE tell me where on earth that swimsuit is from? I kind of love it. I would look nothing like this in it but I still want one!  – TheFriskyFan

The heart wants what it wants, and if you want Farrah Abraham’s bathing suit, well, I’m not going to stop you. We happen to know exactly who makes Farrah’s sparkly, probably-not-waterproof swimsuit. It’s made by Poolside Collection by Karina Copado and it’s $240. You might notice that the Poolside Collection site has cropped out Farrah’s face. I’m guessing they don’t want the association. Style 911: Help Me Find The Perfect Plus-Size Maxi Dress!

“I would love some fashion advice. I’m on the smaller end of plus sized (14-16) and I want to get my first maxi dress. Although I am of average height I have always steered away from long dresses because I have felt like they made me look, for lack of better terms, stumpy and dumpy. I’m willing to take a style leap of faith though! My issue is I have no idea what type of maxi dress to look for. I need one that accommodates a combination of short legs, long torso, and large bust. Ideally it could transition from fairly casual office to going out after work. Any tips?” — Mad for Maxis

Dear Mad for Maxis,

It sounds like you and I have a really similar body shape, and I, too, have shied away from maxi dresses because my junior high PE teacher used to call me Stumpy and I’ve had no desire to resurrect that nickname in my adult life. But the fact is I have seen maxi dresses look truly fabulous (and flattering!) on women of all shapes and sizes, so there’s no reason for us to sit on the sidelines anymore. Let’s make this the summer of maxis! Keep reading »

“I’m a woman with love handles. I’m 5’11″ and a size 10 but even when I was a size 6, my (definitely smaller) love handles were still be a problem. Could you recommend good jeans for someone with this issue? I have two styles of jeans from The Gap and it has to be a really super fabulous body image day for me to wear them out of the house. Basically I’m left with my H&M skinny jeans with normal rise. They’re a size bigger than I normally wear but, unlike The Gap, they still cling well to my thighs despite being a little looser in the waist where I need the help. Going up to a 12 at The Gap is too big, too baggy and completely unflattering.

Any help would be amazing! I’m willing to pay $100 or even a bit more for something that is flattering and fits well.” — Jil

Style 911: Help Me Find A Petite Dress For An Afternoon Wedding!

I am attending a wedding at the end of the month in D.C. I am having a lot of trouble finding a reasonably priced petite dress to wear. This time of the year a lot of dress have stripes, polka dots, flowers, or are neon. The wedding ceremony starts at 3pm, so I need something that will transition from day to night. I am open to color suggestions. I only ask that they not be black or white. Budget-wise I’d like to keep it $100 and below. Please help! –Christa

Dear Christa,

When I initially went searching for a dress for you, I bookmarked a bunch of dresses that are striped, brightly colored, or floral print, because apparently I have a really bad short term memory and they were all really cute. Then I went back and looked at your email, and I realized this is indeed a tough season to be looking for a simpler style of dress.

But this fashion mission isn’t impossible, and I did find a few options that I think would work really well for this wedding (and other events throughout the year!). Read on for all the details about these four lovely frocks… Keep reading »

“I just got these shoes on super sale from a local boutique here in Philly! I can’t wait to wear them this summer … how do you recommend I style them?” –Jackie

First off, nice score on these Swedish Hasbeens! These are awesome. Did you know that Swedish Hasbeens are actually derived from a bunch of Swedish clog deadstock someone found in a warehouse? Or as the Swedish Hasbeens site explains, “Her name was Anita and she was the hottest mum in all of southern Sweden in the 1970s. While smoking Camel she screamed at her kids until her curlers fell out and just looked fabulous in her white high-heeled clogs. ”

The more you know!

I understand not wanting to wait til summer to wear these, though they’ll obviously go great with any bright sundresses you’ve got. So in order to ameliorate the current weather situation, I’m going to suggest that you Wear An Outfit That Is Puzzling To Men — that is, the old shorts and tights combo. Though Rachel and I vehemently disagree on the merits of wearing open-toed shoes with tights, I think it’s tres adorable, and since I’m answering this Style 911, what I say goes. After the jump, I give you two options on how to do this. Keep reading »

“I could really use your advice about this pair of velvet Levi’s that I bought. I have been a jeans-only girl my entire life, so the last time I was at the mall I decided to be a little adventurous and went ahead and bought these pants without any thought as to how I might style them. Now I’m stuck! Thus far, I’ve only been able to awkwardly pair them with a white striped shirt! I could really use suggestions for not only tops, but shoes as well. I hope this doesn’t pose too difficult of a challenge!” – Deepa

Deepa, you are a braver woman than I — I am perennially scared of velvet, mostly because it brings up terrible nightmares of the purple crushed-velvet dress with batwing sleeves I wore to my 8th grade dance. Nightmares! But these velvet pants? They’re pretty damn cute. The thing with velvet is you’ve got to be careful not to pair it with a fabric that’s too weak or flimsy. Otherwise, the pants will completely outshine the shirt. That’s why we’d opt for a chambray button down — it’s got enough heft to it that your outfit will feel balanced. As for shoes, absolutely do not wear the shoes pictured with the pants — those nude platforms will only make your legs look stumpy in velvet jeans. Instead, opt for a low heeled bootie — check out the items we’ve picked out for you, after the jump! Keep reading »

“I need style advice! I’m getting married this summer and all the wedding shoes I’ve found are horrible. They’re mostly these weird cheap looking silver strappy things that are way overpriced. The only cute ones I can find have high heels, but I’m tall (5’10) and my fiancé’s not much taller and I don’t want to tower over him! Do you have any suggestions for low-heeled shoes that would be cute with a wedding dress but also rewearable later (especially if they’re on the expensive side)? Maybe a couple of white/silver options as well as some color?” –Betsy

Dear Betsy,

After spending the last couple hours wading through pages and pages of atrocious wedding shoes, I’m starting to feel your pain, but I still think we can find you the lovely low heels of your dreams. I found 9 options in a pretty wide variety of styles, colors, and prices. Check ‘em out after the jump, and if you’re a fellow tall bride with low-heeled suggestions for Betsy, please share your wedding shoe wisdom in the comments! Last week, I raved about this amaaazing hot pink/olive green combo that Katie Holmes wore to the studio to film an appearance on Late Night with David Letterman. Commenter nomnombacon fell in love with Katie’s gorgeous military-inspired jacket, and can you blame her? It’s such a gorgeous piece. Julie and I did some digging and discovered that the exact coat Katie’s wearing is Balenciaga, which means it costs roughly as much as a vacation home in the Bahamas, but don’t worry–we found three alternative options that aren’t exactly cheap, but much more accessible than the original. On Friday, I got an email from a reader named Tyiesha. It simply said: “Where can I find these?” with the attached photo.

Well, Tyiesha, I looked high and low. Do you want the good news or the bad news first? The bad news? I couldn’t find the exact shoes you’re looking for. I’m thinking they might be Alaia, which would make them prohibitively expensive anyway. But I did find three booties that closely approximate the shoes you’re really jonesing for. Style 911: What Should I Wear To My Event Planning Job?

“My job is a bit unusual because I work in a large sports bar/ lounge at night. I handle all of the events in the space from birthdays, game watches, corporate happy hours and pretty much anything under the sun. I find myself in a wardrobe dilemma!! My hours are so random just like the events and I never know what to wear. The guys that work here just get to wear jeans and our bar t-shirts or sometimes they will wear button ups and jeans. I feel like I have to be dressed a little nicer because you never know when someone will drop by and want to plan a huge event! The other thing that makes it tricky is that I am often on my feet for long periods of time and we have 3 levels so heels aren’t the right footwear at all! Any advice?”

As someone who used to DJ a bunch, and has spent my fair share of time in and around bars, I feel your foot pain. There’s always flats, definitely. But have you considered a platform wedge? They’re actually a lot more comfortable than you might think — because having a platform means you’re not walking on as much of a heel as it first appears.

As for what to wear? Looking professional in a bar scene can be a challenge, but we think dark or black denim, or casual, comfortable dresses should do the trick. Check out our picks after the jump!
