Style 911: “Help Me Find An Open-Back Shirt!”

“I am dying to find a top like the one I recently saw someone wearing that had an open lower back. I know I’m not describing it well, but I found a few that I didn’t really like and I hope you guys will help! Are these tops a little too slutty for every day wearing or are they okay?” – Emily

“One of my dearest friends is getting married in a few months and she’s asked me to be a bridesmaid. Super! However, she had requested that the bridesmaids wear some kind of brown suit instead of the usual dress. Now, while I really appreciate her originality and desire for us girls to be able to use our outfits again later (and really actually use them), I have been having the hardest time finding something cute, appropriate, and cool enough to be worn in Texas in July. We can choose pants, skirts, maybe even some tailored shorts in any shade of brown.” – Brown Frown

First off, you must be a really good friend, because that is a really ungodly bad color scheme to go with for a wedding. You’re fighting against two difficulties here: 1) The color and 2) the heat. So it’s imperative that if you’re being told to wear a “suit” of some kind, you have lightweight layers. And secondly, it’s likely that you’re going to want to take the blazer off as soon as the ceremony portion of the wedding is over, so it’s imperative that you have something real cute on underneath. So I say, focus on that portion of the outfit above all else. And in the event that you can’t find anything that you’re 100 percent thrilled with, remember that you can always cover up a less than thrilling dress with some fun statement jewelry and bold shoes, and hey, it’s only one day out of your life.

I’ve worn contacts since I was 14, but recently, my eyes just aren’t tolerating them very well. I am moving closer and closer to wearing glasses full time. I believe that 90% of my hatred of glasses comes back to the fact that I just don’t like the way they look with earrings, one of my favorite accessories. Can I wear glasses and earrings together? I saw the perfect tee when I was in high school, it was simple, fitted, had cap-sleeves, a nice color, and a very, very deep scoop neck–like “how would I wear a bra under that” deep…only problem–it was online and I didn’t have a card. Now, I can’t find any shirts that are like it! Most tees either don’t have plunging necklines or they aren’t fitted (damn you massive trash-bag-like tee trend!). I’m looking for something that isn’t see-through or white…designs are fine, I love an interesting tee! …I just can’t find anything. – Scoop Me Away

Isn’t it the worst when you see a magical shirt you love and then can’t find it when you’re ready to buy? The shirt becomes a mythical object that you’re constantly searching for, never satisfied. I had the same thing with a striped H&M top a few years back. I totally get it. What I’m hearing is that you want a deep scoop — something a tad scandalous that might be good for layering, or to wear with a cute camisole underneath. I think I may have found you some suitable replacements that might satiate your scoop neck craving. Click through to check ‘em out.

Style 911: “What Do I Wear With My New Anthro Dress?”

I am the proud new owner of Rodna Halter Dress from Anthropologie–which is a store I usually just drool over.  This is my first purchase from Anthro and I have to say it was an impulse buy! Now I’m not sure where/how to wear my new favorite dress.  It’s a fine dark navy corduroy and the neckline is beautiful.  I purchased the size 12 and it makes my short, curvy self look fabulous. The lines look formal, but the fabric and the fact that it has elastic in the sides makes it a bit more casual.  Please help! — Mina Keep reading »

Style 911: What Do I Wear With A Purple Body Con Dress?

I love these tight mini dresses with sleeves that are everywhere right now but I\’m unsure of how to stylize one. What would I wear with a purple one? I want to wear tights because its cold! Could I color block it with some gold tights? But then what kind of shoes? Help!–Lisa

Should you pair a purple body con dress with gold tights? In a word–and I mean this in the nicest way possible–NO. Okay okay, technically you can, but we wouldn’t recommend it, unless you’re performing in a parade, or auditioning for cheer squad. Instead, we’ve paired your purple dress with a completely different color palette–and we hope you’ll like it. As for the shoes, go for something with a not-too-high heel. Body-con is already mega-sexy, and if you wear a really high heel you run the risk of looking tarty. Check our selections after the jump! Keep reading »

Style 911: “Find Me Cheap & Cute Ts, Please!”

As a girl who has just started down the road of personal style, I noticed a few things about my wardrobe. Since high school, most of my outfits were based on thrift-store and band tees. When I began to branch out from that, I avoided all tees and went for the interesting pieces… Then I realized I had nothing basic to pair with those pieces! I have plain tees, sure, but they all look like cheap tees. I’m interested in the types of tees Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have been putting out with StyleMint, but I don’t think that I can justify $30 for a tee. Where would you suggest I look to find a decent-quality tee that will flatter my shape as well as my tight budget? — Crystal

As a girl living on the cheap, we can totally feel your pain. Cheap Ts are an absolute must! But! We also wanted to find Ts that were socially responsible, too. So we set about the difficult task of finding affordable T-shirts that were also either fair trade or employing sustainable fabrics. Instead of going for the usual suspects–H&M, Forever 21, American Apparel–we wanted to give you some cool alternative options. In fact, a bunch of the great shirts we sourced are from a company called Alternative Apparel, which has established a series of vendor guidelines and principles it applies to its business. They include no forced labor, no child labor, and fair wages, among others. But enough about the great companies you should support, let’s get to the tees…
