Women in tech have got more to worry about than sexist attitudes and an abysmal dude-to-lady ratio: at a tech trade show in Germany on Sunday night, there were pole-dancing robots. The bots, which were designed by artist Giles Walker, rent out for $40,000 apiece. Two of the bots shook their silicone tits at the CeBIT Expo on Sunday night at an event where the British and German Prime Ministers appeared, oddly enough. I support pole dancers, but even in robot form they aren’t appropriate entertainment for a tech event. Who thought there would be a way to sexualize women at random tech events in a way even worse than booth babes? [Fast Company]
I went to a college that was funded with money from a nearby casino. Unsurprisingly, the biggest neighboring city has a population of 30,000 people and 10 fully-nude strip clubs for them to attend. Regardless of how expensive the drinks are and how off-putting both the strippers and clientele are (one guy told me he’d actually SEEN a herpes outbreak on one of the strippers as she was rubbing the pole), the strip clubs continue to be the biggest source of tourist revenue for the area.
I didn’t get around to going to one until my junior year. The outing was suggested by one of my male friends. We went to Sirens*, one of the bigger clubs in the area. It was on the side of the highway in an industrial-looking building behind a power generator. Inside there were six stages featuring girls of all shapes and sizes.
My friend bought us a round of shots as soon as we sat down. Each one cost $8. There were a couple of guys there who didn’t look like they had $8. One of the strippers came over to talk to us. She introduced herself as Ivy, even though she had a massive tattoo on her back that said “Courtney.” She started telling the men that she was going to go have sex with one of her girlfriends that night, and that they should come watch. “Josh Malina [who plays David Rosen] has left me messages that he’s a police detective and that he wants to question me. It’d scare the hell out of me. He did the same thing to Katie, saying he was a tabloid reporter and wanted scoop on the actors of ‘Scandal.’ He’s so bad. He’ll take our phones and tweet things like ‘I’m horny’ on Twitter and retweet it real fast. He’s a little shit. Me or Darby [Stanchfield, who plays Abby] are the more serious ones. For me, it’s because of my character. I try to stay low-key, in that Huck headspace. Columbus [Short, who plays Harrison] is the dancer. On Fridays after we wrap, he loves to give a little strip dance. He starts taking off his suspenders in front of everybody. Kerry [Washington, a.k.a. Olivia Pope] loves to sing; she’s a beautiful singer.”
– Tucked into this New York magazine Q&A (with spoilers!!!!) with Guillermo Diaz, who plays Huck on “Scandal,” are a few tidbits about his cast members’ off-camera behavior. As it turns out, hottie Columbus Short (pictured), who sizzles with sexual tension alongside Olivia Pope as her righthand man Harrison, likes to strip down at cast parties. Shonda Rimes, if you have any humanity in your heart whatsoever, you will write this into a plot. [NYMag.com]
“What do you feel about going topless?” he asked me over the phone. I hesitantly replied, “Well, I guess I’m okay with it. But will they be able to touch my boobs?” There was an awkward pause on the other end of the line. “Yes, but you’ll never have to do anything more. I promise.”
A few days earlier, I’d been scanning Craigslist for part-time gigs and came across an ad that seemed too good to be true: “Beautiful college girls sought for nightclub modeling. Receive up to $1000/night. Email pics.” I answered and said that I was a 21-year-old student and attached some cheesy iPhoto shots.
It was January of my senior year of college in New York, and I was completely and utterly broke. I had been doing freelance work to keep me afloat, but things started to go downhill in December, when I only made $600 for the entire month — not even enough to cover my rent. On a cold night I huddled in the school’s library, answered every student job posting I could find and scanned Craigslist. Five minutes after answering the nightclub post, I received a response from a guy named Bob. He wanted me to call him. I ducked outside and dialed the number he sent me. Keep reading »
Sometimes I feel really bad for the shit that strippers have to deal with! A 16th birthday party filled with testosterone-laden horndogs is right on top of that list. Keep reading »
Contrary to what guys might think, there are many women out there who are not opposed to going to strip clubs … under the appropriate circumstances.
That time you got dragged to a strip club by your cokehead, college boyfriend and he made you stuff dollar bills in panties or that time your guy friend thought a stripper wanted to sleep with him so he made you hang out with him all night waiting for her, those strip club adventures were not exactly your idea of a good time. But there were other times when you enjoyed yourself. That time you blew off work and met your boyfriend at a local strip joint in the middle of the afternoon or when you went with all your lesbian friends in Vegas. FUN!
Chances are, if you ask, many women are down to go watch some pole action. But there are a few caveats. Click through for the DOs and DON’Ts of taking your lady to a strip joint.
After a New York nightclub tried to justify its dancers getting the same “artistic” tax exemptions as ballerinas, New York’s highest court ruled this week that strip clubs will have to pay their state sales taxes (guess the lawmakers don’t see the artistry in stripping). This means the club’s cover charge and lap dances will be taxed. While New York isn’t giving a break to the pole-twirling ladies, Hollywood just can’t get enough of them! Olivia Wilde plays a sharp-tongued stripper who tries her hand at butter carving in the film “Butter,” Vanessa Hudgens will slip into lucite heels for her role as a stripper who escapes a serial killer in next month’s thriller “The Frozen Ground,” and Salma Hayek plays an exotic dancer for the third time in the recent French film “Americano.” Popular culture has a history of fascination with strippers, from tell-all books to R&B songs. So let’s take a look back at some of the most notable stripper moments in pop culture! Read more…
The Republican National Convention is August 27 to 30 in Tampa, Florida, and that means the area’s 40 strip clubs are scrambling to get ready. Strip club owners say that during the 2009 Super Bowl in Tampa, they doubled and tripled the number of dancers. What will happen for this GOP-palooza? Well, you’ll be happy to hear the Sarah Palin-lookalike stripper is booked. Another club has set up an online chatroom called the Club Cam where deep-pocketed Republicans can chat with strippers — for $4-a-minute, plus a $19.99 monthly membership — before their plane even lands in Tampa. Today in the world of Very, Very Serious Legal Battles: A strip club is trying to get an emergency injunction … to keep Octomom Nadya Suleman from stripping at a competing club. Suleman, you’ll remember, was due to launch her stripping career at T’s Lounge in West Palm Beach with a series of eight shows that were to begin tonight. But after one of the club’s bartenders called her “crazy” in a TV interview, Suleman canceled the gigs just days after signing the contract. Now she’s due to appear at the nearby Playhouse Gentleman’s Club on Friday—unless the injunction stops her. Read more …
