Remember the custom-built, $8 million train that rolled into the Louis Vuitton Fall/Winter show at Paris Fashion Week a few months ago? It isn’t being put in storage just yet–in fact, it’s been reconstructed in a New York studio to serve as the backdrop for the collection’s ad campaign. Steven Meisel shot the ads, starring 10 female models decked out in uber glamorous travel wear, assisted by four male porters. Says designer Marc Jacobs: “We wanted to continue the journey we started with the fashion show,” including “the glamour of travel and the romance of going somewhere.” Wherever that train’s going, we’d love to catch a ride. Racism In French Elle
An article on "black style" sparks controversy, rightly so. Read More »

A couple of weeks ago, we showed you the GIFs Steven Meisel created as a teaser for this spread, which will be featured in Vogue Italia’s April issue. The usual cover girls are in some distinctly unusual ensembles, poses, and situations, and it seems to have stirred up a bit of controversy. The publication alleges that the shoot was inspired by drag queens, but others, like Vibe, are calling racism. I would say questionable taste, yes, but not racism, especially after reading the accompanying description. What’s your opinion? Mine is that both photographer Steven Meisel and makeup artist Pat McGrath, who did the faces, are complete criminal geniuses. This editorial is all kinds of progressive. [Fashionista]

Steven Meisel Creates Crazy, Trashy, Amazing GIFs For Vogue Italia

Never thought you’d see a supermodel with the track of her weave showing, did you? Famed photographer and (in my opinion) total creative genius Steven Meisel is already known for his exceptionally provocative work (see: his fantastic “Supermodels Enter Rehab” editorial), but he’s taken it a step further with a preview for Vogue Italia‘s spring fashion issue called “Haute Mess,” a series of insane, hypnotizing, and vaguely nauseating GIFs. Read more — and see the GIFs — after the jump… Keep reading »

Steven Meisel Douses Model In Oil For Vogue Italy

Fashion photographer Steven Meisel has never been one to shy away from melding hot button topics and high-end style shoots. His latest story for Vogue Italy, “Water & Oil,” is no exception. This time around, he shot model Kristen McMenamy covered in oil in a clear homage to the BP oil spill. On the one hand, he dares to shoot models doing something other than skipping down the sidewalk. On the other hand, is a well-clad model slathered in fake crude oil posed on the rocks a beautiful sight to behold? See more of the pics after the jump. Keep reading »

Steven Meisel Sure Likes His Models Dirty

What is going on with all this dirty chic nonsense? Craig McDean shot a huge spread for the September 2009 issue of W magazine highlighting the stylish side of homelessness (yeah, wtf), and now legendary photographer Steven Meisel has carried the theme over to Italian Vogue. In fact, Meisel shot not one, not two, but three covers featuring Anna Jagodzinska, Will Lewis, Ash Stymest, Jamie Bochert and, of course, Sasha Pivovarova. (Pivovarova had a starring role as the Dior tissue paper-clad bag lady in McDean’s W shoot.) On each cover, the models pose in pairs or trios clad in luxurious clothes that are made to look worn and makeup that makes them look like a troupe of dusty, thirsty vagabonds. Beyond being perhaps the dirtiest cover to date, this triple issue is also distinct for using male models on the front, a rare practice for Italian Vogue. [Design Scene] Keep reading »

Padma Lakshmi Gets Nude For Jewels

So if that commercial for the Western Bacon Thickburger didn’t convince you, this advertisement surely will: Padma Lakshmi is really, really sexy. It’s for her jewelry line and was shot last spring by legendary fashion photographer, Steven Meisel. As is plenty obvious, Lakshmi is in the buff and “dressed” only in gold necklaces and gemstones from her collection. The ad will be featured in magazines this fall and will also be seen on her website, PadmaLakshmi.com. The jewels are sold online at Bergdorf Goodman stores nationwide. Nude model/designer not included. Do we like? [WWD]

Even “Real” Women Are Digitally Enhanced

Just like every other impressionable tween, I saw models in magazines and felt a little bad about myself because my body didn’t look like theirs. I’m a smart girl, but it didn’t really set in that these were not their bodies (or faces, even) until I worked at a magazine and saw how photos were tweaked — who wants to look at pages of ugly people? On Newsweek.com, a writer takes part in a photo shoot, then goes through the lengthy retouching process, demonstrating how much work it actually takes to make someone look “flawless”. Keep reading »
