R. Kelly Responds To Sexual Abuse Expose With Football Metaphor

todays lady news

UPDATE, 12/18/13, 10:30 a.m.:  The title of this post used to read “R. Kelly Responds To Underage Girl Sex Expose With Football Metaphor ,” which was incorrect. R. Kelly hasn’t been accused of “sex,” he has been accused of sexual abuse of underage girls. In my haste to write a headline yesterday, I didn’t think that distinction through. — Jessica

The Soapbox: Why Does Anyone Still Think It's Okay To Listen To R. Kelly?

R. Kelly is one of the most successful R&B artists of our time. He’s sold 54 million records globally, had a career that spans three decades and penned classic records that have provided the soundtrack for some of our best moments.

But while folks were bumping and grinding to his hits, other things were going bump in the night. Keep reading »

Teacher Who Raped 14-Year-Old Student Is Free After 30 Days In Jail

Stacey Dean Rambold

Good news, Montana parents! I know you were worried that Stacey Dean Rambold was stuck behind bars instead of in the classroom at Billings High School, where he liked to teach/repeatedly rape his 14-year-old  female student. But after serving only 30 days in prison, the 54-year-old is free to prey on your other 9th grade daughters who seem “older” than their “chronological age” and “as much in control of the situation,” as his sentencing judge put it. But hopefully your daughters won’t commit suicide as the rape case makes its way through the courts, like Rambold’s victim did.   [NPR] [CBS News]

Judge To Reconsider Rapist’s 30-Day Sentence

todays lady news
  • The Montana judge who sentenced a teacher to only 30 days of a 15-year sentence in prison for the statutory rape of a 14-year-old girl (who later killed herself) has decided his sentence is “illegal” because it is less than the mandatory two-year minimum. Judge Todd Baugh, who said the 14-year-old victim was “in as much control of the situation” as her 49-year-old rapist because children aren’t children when sex is involved now, or something, has called for a new hearing this Friday. Let’s hope that creepy teacher gets a sentence he deserves. [Jezebel] Keep reading »

Last week, we told you about an appalling case in which Montana Judge G. Todd Baugh sentenced convicted statutory rapist Stacey Rambold to a mere 30 days in jail for raping a then-14-year-old student (who subsequently committed suicide). Judge Baugh justified his lenient sentencing, saying that the victim was ”older than her chronological age” and “as much in control of the situation” as Rambold. People were understandably appalled and Judge Baugh has since apologized (though Rambold’s puny sentence stands). But writer and former lawyer Betsy Karasik (above) found herself “troubled” by this case for other reasons and wrote an op-ed for The Washington Post arguing that she doesn’t believe “that all sexual conduct between underage students and teachers should necessarily be classified as rape, and I believe that absent extenuating circumstances, consensual sexual activity between teachers and students should not be criminalized.”

Yeah, really. Keep reading »

The couple, both famous in China, who have been “dating” since Miki was 11, have gone public with their “relationship,” posting lovey-dovey photos of themselves “finger kissing” and shmoopy messages like “I will always love you and you will be my darling forever!!!” on China’s social media site, Weibo. Instead of raised eyebrows and condemnation, they’ve gained nearly one million fans in the process. Keep reading »

It’s Time To Cry: Teen Girl Murdered Before She Could Testify Against Her Rapist

Shania Gray photo

More than half of all sexual assaults are never reported to the police and 97 percent of rapists will never spend a day in jail. These statistics from the Rape Abuse & Incest National Network are horrifying — but they also remind us how incredible 16-year-old Shania Gray of Texas was. The high school junior reported her alleged statutory rape to police and was scheduled to go to trial next month to try and put her alleged rapist, Franklin B. Davis behind bars.

Tragically, Shania was murdered by Davis before she ever had a chance to testify against him. Keep reading »

A Completely Uncomfortable Engagement — Between A Politician And A High School Girl

This week in totally disturbing nuptials news, a staffer on John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign met his bride-to-be while on a tour stop on behalf of the Republican candidate. The only problem? Oh, she was 17, and he was visiting her high school. There are so many gross gems from the romance of 29-year-old Christopher Cox and his now 21-year-old bride Andrea Catsimatidis, featured in the New York Times Vows section this weekend. As the couple explains it to the Times:

“She was the only person I remembered meeting that day,” he said. Ms. Catsimatidis, who at the time was five days shy of her 18th birthday, found herself taken by Mr. Cox’s political convictions, as well as his boyish looks.

“All the girls were cutting me in line,” remembered Ms. Catsimatidis, now 21. “They all wanted to meet the cute McCain guy.”

Oh, uh, okay. Keep reading »

Khloe Kardashian Talks About Statutory Rape

I think it’s really brave of Khloe Kardashian to talk about losing her virginity at age 14 on “The Joy Behar Show.” She says she was pressured by her 18-year-old boyfriend. Ahem, statutory rape. Khloe admits that for three years after the experience, she felt too uncomfortable with her body to have sex. While these things are difficult to talk about, especially publicly, I’m glad she did. There’s this gray area of sexual experience for young women that can be so confusing—when the sex is consensual, but coerced. It’s hard to put into words, but Khloe does it well and I think a lot of young girls will relate. Kim Kardashian, on the other hand, plays too bashful to talk about sex. She thinks it’s “super personal.” Yet, she’s famous from a sex tape. Lame, Kim. Lame. [CNN] Keep reading »
