Yesterday I attended the first-ever taping of “What Not to Wear” in front of a live studio audience. I was invited to attend because, as you may remember, last year I was surprise-ambushed by my friends and family and coworkers and given a $5,000 makeover — complete with a wardrobe overhaul, make up assessment and new hairdo. As a past contributor — which is what “WNTW” calls its makeovers — I was invited to update viewers on my life since the show aired. But I also learned a ton – from “WNTW” experts Stacy London, Clinton Kelly, Carmindy and Ted Gibson– about what exactly goes into putting together a hour-long TV program in front of a studio audience. I won’t reveal exactly what went on during the one-of-a-kind episode — you’re going to have to tune in to find out! — but you should definitely click through for tips on makeup, clothes and how your TV sausage is made.

My “What Not To Wear” Makeover

Yes, it’s true: I got a makeover on TLC’s “What Not to Wear.”

First off, let’s get to the immediate questions. Yes, the show’s hosts Stacy London and Clinton Kelly are as warm, friendly and sweet off camera as they are on. Yes, you really do get $5,000 to spend on clothes and shoes in two days. Yes, they take all of your old clothes away and donate them to charity. Yes, Carmindy is a genius when it comes to makeup and Ted Gibson is a hair wizard.

But probably the most pressing question — why I, a style editor at a major women’s website, would need a complete “What Not to Wear” makeover — is going to take a little longer to answer. Keep reading »

Guys Are More Into Our Hair Than Our Boobs

Forget about your outfit, your makeup, or your breasts. A new survey done by Pantene found that dudes are pretty much obsessed with our hair. About three-fourths of men said they notice a woman because of her locks. In fact, most men notice hair before our clothes, our legs, our makeup, or our breasts. Yup, most men would approach a girl with hot hair over a girl with hot cleave and about 60 percent of men said they prefer nice hair over a nice rack when it comes to choosing a girlfriend. Gosh, I find this so hard to believe, but that’s what the survey says. Well, girls, I guess we’d better load up on those Pantene products for healthy, shiny hair. That’s the whole point of this survey, right? To motivate us to buy Pantene. The only thing that would actually motivate me to buy Pantene is Stacy London’s commercial. She’s so cool. Frisky Q&A: Clinton Kelly Of “What Not To Wear” Is Judging You

Clinton Kelly book

“What Not To Wear” is my go-to channel-surfing show — and if it’s a weekend marathon, I will binge on six straight episodes like Lady Gaga at a lobster hat sale. What’s not to like? The women (and occasionally men) nominated by their loved ones for “What Not To Wear” are all-too-relatable with their style problems: the baggy clothes, the closets filled with dresses that don’t fit anymore. And the hosts, Clinton Kelly and Stacy London, make all the funny-but-firm observations that most of us think but don’t want to say.

With hundreds of episodes filled with “fashion don’ts” under his belt, Clinton debuts a new book next week called Oh No She Didn’t! The Top 100 Style Mistakes Women Make and How to Avoid Them. But don’t expect “What Not To Wear” makeovers past to get raked over the coals. No joke, Clinton said Oh No She Didn’t was written based on what he saw tourists wearing in New York City’s Times Square!

At the end of a long day filming “What Not To Wear,” Clinton called me for a, um, colorful conversation about the new book, hairy legs and armpits, and why you should leave French manicures to the whores. Oh, and he called me a “little bitch.” Keep reading »

Stacy London Has Style For Hire

“What Not to Wear” was my favorite show because Stacy London and co-star Clinton Kelly offered average American women, and some men, a wearable style that got them noticed without being over the top. They gave these women a starting point and an education on how to dress their bodies regardless of size or shape. Now, Stacy is offering her styling services without the humiliation of a television audience. She has teamed with friend and former apparel executive Cindy McLaughlin to launch Style for Hire, a sort of agency of stylists eager to take on America’s sartorially challenged. Keep reading »

Now I Can Call Myself A “Nude Model”

OK, admittedly the headline is a little misleading. That’s me on the right in a nude-colored dress pretending to be a model for a fashion segment with Stacy London. We taped the segment — all about how to wear pale colors for spring — early this morning to air on “The Today Show” at a later date. It was fun hanging out in the green room watching the celebs get all made up for their appearances. And since I also had my chance in the hair and make-up chair and the producers even sent a car to pick me up (way, way) early and take me home, it was fun to fantasize briefly of a life where that’s just a typical morning. A girl could get used to that kind of treatment! Anyway, stay tuned for an upcoming post about a few fashion tips I picked up while getting styled by Ms. London. Keep reading »
