The Squirrel Whisperer Will Put Tiny Hats On All Your Squirrels

Mary Krupa is a freshman at Penn State University, but kids around campus know her mostly as The Squirrel Whisperer. Mary has taken to befriending the local fauna, and loves squirrels the best — so much so, that she’s designed a series of tiny squirrel hats for her bushy-tailed friends to wear. The squirrels gladly oblige Mary, but only if she’s got food.  “It’s kind of a give and take. They’re not going to play with me unless I have food to give them,” she admitted.

How much does Mary love squirrels? She’s even created a Facebook page for her favorite, Sneezy. Sneezy wears a lot of hats. [Onward State]

Scientists Resurrect Ice Age Flower

Plants Vs. Boyfriends
Why foliage rules over fellas. Read More »

This story sounds like the stuff of hardcore science fiction, but it’s really a heartwarming squirrel success story. Over 30,000 years ago, some industrious Siberian squirrels collected nuts and seeds and stored them in their hibernation burrows. When scientists discovered these burrows in modern day Russia, they were buried more than 60 feet below the surface, and they contained thousands of seed samples that had been effectively flash-frozen, preserved perfectly under the permafrost. Here’s where things get really crazy: scientists were able to use fruit tissues recovered from these ice age squirrel burrows to resurrect the Silene stenophylla plant, and the new specimen is fertile, complete with white flowers and viable seeds. Is this one more step toward making the plot of “Encino Man” a reality? We can only wait, and hope. [ABC News]

Clint Eastwood’s Best Friend Is A Squirrel Named Lola (Plus 12 Other Pet-Obsessed Celebs!)

Who would have thought Dirty Harry would have such a soft spot for a wild animal as inconsequential as the squirrel? According to a truly heartwarming story of potentially dubious origins, Clint Eastwood’s best friend is a squirrel named Lola who lives near his office on the Paramount lot. A source says:

“Clint leaves the front door open whenever he’s inside working so Lola can come and go. He gets a kick out of watching her and always keeps a bag of shelled peanuts on the bottom shelf of a bookcase in case she gets hungry. Clint would be so upset if Lola disappeared. He enjoys her company.”

How beautiful! Normally, to quote Carrie Bradshaw (ugh, I’m sorry), I consider squirrels to be rats with cuter outfits, but Clint’s ringing endorsement of the fluffy-tailed creature may have changed my mind. [Contact Music]

In honor of Clint and Lola’s love, here are 12 other celebs who are equally as obsessively attached to their pets.
