No. There is nothing better than the idea of Riff Raff, the rapper/corn row aficionado who was clearly the inspiration for James Franco’s “Spring Breakers” character Alien, playing the part of Jamie Franko on upcoming episodes of “One Life To Live.” Mr. Raff, rightfully peeved that Franco pretty much stole his whole existence as inspiration for Alien, said in the past that “the storyline ain’t mine but no one on Earth can deny that James Franco’s image and appearance characteristics are Riff Raff all day.” He even mounted a Twitter campaign — #WhyJamesFrancoWhy — calling him out on the image theft. Spoiler alert! This post contains spoilers about the movie “Spring Breakers.”
When I heard that Selena Gomez had been cast in a Harmony Korine movie, my brain kind of exploded. Korine is known for his dark, sexualized films (like “Kids,” which made Chloe Sevigny a star), while Gomez is a Disneyfied, baby-faced princess who until recently was dating Justin Bieber. The trailer and promo pics for “Spring Breakers” showed Gomez and her castmates – “High School Musical” alum Vanessa Hudgens, “Pretty Little Liars” star Ashley Benson, and the director’s wife Rachel Korine – wearing bikinis and little else as they drank, smoked, got arrested, and did drugs. Was this movie going to be Gomez’s “Can’t Be Tamed“/”I’m a Slave 4 U” moment?
Not quite. Keep reading »
Since it was a movie — “Where the Boys Are” — that changed Spring break into what it is today, it’s only fitting that we look at some of the best (and the worst) Spring break flings from flicks. And while that film was explicit for 1960, it’s a far cry from the bare-chested and drug-filled “Spring Breakers“ that’s out Friday. But both have one of the key elements to the season’s beach party: sex. Spring break is eponymous with spring flings, and we aren’t talking sweet Summer love. More like quick, week-long lust — not exactly a recipe for relationship success. So grab your bikini and a brewski for a look back at the most memorable onscreen sand-filled hookups! Read more…
Imagine the shitshow it must be to be married to Harmony Korine. I’ve disliked his work (aside from this awesome Proenza Schouler campaign video) since “Gummo,” which I found to be extremely exploitative and revolting. That said, this new Korine work, “Spring Breakers,” is getting fairly good reviews across the board. Assholes like it. Non-assholes like it. I may give it a chance, but like, an “on demand” or “Netflix” chance, not a spend-$14-on-a-ticket chance. Thursday night, Korine and his actor pals gathered at Cinespace for the film’s Los Angeles premiere. But you know what? Considering this is their home turf, most of the actresses — barring Selena Gomez — didn’t really bring their A-game. Disagree with me? Share your thoughts in the comments!
It’s great seeing Selena Gomez break free from the shackles of Bieber and really come into her own. While Sir Biebs continues his bizarre Downward Spiral European Vacation, Gomez is starring in what’s likely to be one of the top movies of the season, the Harmony Korine-directed “Spring Breakers” with her BFF Vanessa Hudgens and — sigh — James Franco. In any case, Selener seems to favor two designers in particular: Dolce & Gabbana and Versace. Take a look at her ten best, and tell us which is your favorite (and send her your post-break up congrats!).
